HiFiBerry DAC+ not starting after long inactivity

Hi there,

 

I run a Raspberry PI 3B+ and HiFiBerryOS.

I flashed it about 1 year ago and was using it daily. Then I did not use it for 3 months and once I rebooted it, it did not work.

I could see it on the network, but not connect to it.

After several restarts, I decided tonight to flash the latest HiFiBery 3 OS again.

 

Flashing went fine, inserted the SD card and it still does not work, even after several reboots.

I cannot login to the hifiberry.local, independent of laptop (linux, mac) and browser (chrome, Firefox). Ethernet cable is connected to both my laptop and hifiberry.

 

Any ideas what I shall do (except continue flashing new OS?)?

  I have no screen connected to the hifiberrym just plugged it into a power socket und have it connected with the ethernet cable.

  I dont have a micro HDMI cable, hence I also cannot esaily connect it.

  Dear HiFiBerry team

  thank you for your question agaIn because connecting the HifiBerry to a screen made me double check which Raspberry version I have since the HDMI connectors are different between the models (4B only microHDMI, not regular HDMI or HMDI mini. Here is a good resource on how to identify which raspberry PI you have when you cannot easily unscrew the raspberry from the DAC or a case to simply read off the model version:

  I now realise that I am very stupid. Because I used the 3B in the past, I flashed the 3B onto my raspberry which is actually version 4B.

  So it now boots and works fine with 4B HiFiBerryOS version.

   

  However, still 2 interesting observations (which might also be useful to others in the future):

  1) I am still confused as to why the 4B didnt boot up as it used to, just because I didnt use it for 3 months.

  I have the same issue on another HifiBerry at my partners house where we did not use it for months, and now just plugging it into power does NOT make it available to the network anymore. When it does show up and you try to connect to it via AirPlay, it will say 'error: cannot connect to HifiBerry'.

  Question: Why does this happen apparently consistently with DIFFERENT raspberry/hifiberrys?

  Does the SD card get corrupted over time? Does it need any power source? In my head, unlike say a BIOS battery or RAM, it should not require constant power to keep its memory.

  2) Also interesting to note: Trying to access hifiberry.local from my linux machine with Chrome immediately results in an error screen 'cannot load website', whereas using chrome on my mac worked just fine. I made sure to access the hifiberry.local link via the Instruction page so as to not screw up the domain name.

  I can't say why this happened. SD card corruption can happen even if not in use, but it's quite rare. Without access to the system itself, it's basically impossible to say.

  hifiberry.local will only work if your system uses MDNS name resolution. That might not be the case on your Linux machine.
