Hardware or software problem ?

Hi everyone

I'm using a Pi4+Berry HD with archlinux (MPD).

Eveyrthing work fine during 1 year. Since few months, regulary (and more often every days) when I boot the Pi4, I'm unable to play anything. 

If I reboot enough time It's eventually work. 

I check the difference between when it's working and when it's not working and notice this message in the dmesg

hdmi-audio-codec hdmi-audio-codec.2.auto: ASoC: error at snd_soc_dai_startup on i2s-hifi: -19

Google find a issue in github but don't seem related. 

So I downgrade the kernel until 1.5 year ago and same issue.

I'm guessing it's some hardware problem with de DAC2HD. What do you think ?

  The HDMI audio codec has nothing to do with the DAC2HD. My best guess is a corrupted software installation that can result in a behavior like this.

  I agree with you about the error as nothing to do with the issue.

  But the problem appear gradually, at the begining the problem appear one time in few week, and the issue are disappear after one reboot. 

  Few week ago it's almost everyday but after one reboot the problem disappear.

  Currently I need many (~ 5 - 10 ) reboot to solve the problem. 

  And between each reboot I don't touch the software. So It's a little hard to see how the problem can come from a corrupted software. 

  But well, just to be sure I'm not drinking too much, I just run a checksum verification on every file install on my Pi4 (against the checksum from pkg), and everything seem OK. No weirds modifications (only in /etc)

  I don't see how a hardware problem on the DAC2HD could cause this. You might try a fresh installation of HiFiBerryOS on a new SD card to see if it get's detected correctly with this.

  BTW: The HDMI error message shows that there is at least some problem in your setup. We strongly recommend to disable onboard audio.

  Well...ok I exclude some driver with blacklist. But still same issue. I just try 32 reboot (successively) and count 8 times I got the correct ouput of

   

  aplay --list-devices
  **** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****

  and the rest I got 

  aplay --list-devices

  Without *ANY* change, I just do in loop

  aplay --list-devices

  reboot

  so It's just very hard for me to see how it's can be from software problem.

  If you think it's impossible that come from a hardware problem on the DAC, do you think that can come from the pi4 mothercard ?

  I can't comment on anything here. I don't even know what kernel version your system is using. We don't have experience with archlinux. There can be all kinds of things that can go wrong. Therefore, the recommendation was easy:
  You might try a fresh installation of HiFiBerryOS on a new SD card to see if it get's detected correctly with this.
  
  This helps you to see if there is probably some hardware problem. BTW: Make sure NOTHING else is connected to the GPIOs, that's also a common cause for problems.
