Amp100 click and pops during playback

Hi,

I saw there are many posts regarding the clicking and poping noises during playback on Amp100, like listening to a very bad vinly. I tried to change many different things, also different player software and I cold not come to a conclusion, except maybe the pops are less in volume if power supply is lower. I tried 28V, 24V, 19V and 12V all of them capable of enough amperage. Is it possible that the Amp100 board is defective? In that case is it possible to change it for properly working one?

  Hi Damir,

  I was one of the ones who submitted a question about the clicks and pops with the AMP100, back in June of last year.  Unfortunately I did not get any useful response from support, and the only solution I was able to come up with while troubleshooting on my own, was to upgrade my RPI from a 3B+ to a 4.  With the 3B+, I would get clicks and pops constantly, but when I switched to the RPI 4, they pretty much went away.  I say 'pretty much' because every now and then, if I stop playback or switch from one source to another - like from Spotify to MPD player to play some CD images from a NAS, I will hear a little pop.  But, it's nowhere near the frequency and consistency that I had with the 3B+.  I'm going on the theory that it has something to do with the increased memory and speed of the RPI 4 that 'cured' the issue, but I'm no electronics expert, so that's all I can come up with.  I use a 3B+ with an AMP2, and have no such issues, it works flawlessly.

  I'm not sure why nobody at Hifiberry has experienced this issue with the AMP100, and only end users do.  Hopefully you were able to resolve this issue as well.

  Hi Paul,

  Thank you for sharing this. I actually came to same conclusion, I borrowed RPI4 and after some tests it looks pretty much OK. From Hifiberry support I received also a modified conf file for AMP100 I tested with it in place. Since the current RPI4 stock low currently (at least here in EU) it looks like I will receive it only at end of this month. Will try again then, if not OK, I will for sure replace it with AMP2 or DAC. The interesting part is that I tried with RPI3B (not + version) and it behaves a lot better (of course no BT here), but still with pops and clicks, just lower in volume. I noticed also that if I lower the voltage from 27V to 19V the pops also starts to decrease and at around 12V they are gone completely (on RPI3B+ some clicks are still present). 

  Like you said I also do not know how the preproduction tests were done and how it happened nobody actually had same problems. Too bad, the AMP100 looks very good otherwise. Hopefully someday the issue will be solved.

  Hi Damir,

  Thanks for sharing your experience with us.  Did you manage to resolve the clicks you had with the 3B+ Amp100 combo?  We have some 3b+ Pi's and wanted to use them with Amp100 boards.  Also, what case did you use to wrap up your 3B+ (and/or 4B) and Amp100 assemblies?  Did you also use a fan with these assemblies?
