Amp2 Moode - No Sound

Hello,

I am not getting any sound out of my Amp2.  I have it installed on a Pi4 8GB running Moode.  I've selected the HifiBerry Amp2 as the output device (rebooted Moode).  I've tried several know working speakers, rated at 8 ohms, on both channels, no sound.  I also tried another Pi4 4GB.  While familiar with the Raspberry Pi, I've never worked with an audio hat and software.  But looking at the dmesg and /var/log/moode.log, I can't see any issue, the device appears to be recognized by the host and moode.  Unless I'm missing something.  So I don't know if I have a DOA or other issue.   Any insight would be appreciated.

  Can't say anything about Moode, but according to the logs, the sound card seems to be configured correctly. You might try another Pi as defective GPIOs are not too rare.

  I've tried two Raspberry PI 4 w/ the same result.  One 8GB and the a 4GB.

  I just installed HifiBerrryOS and still no sound.  It automatically recognized the Hat as a DAC+/Amp2.  I'm in the process of trying to return a DOA unit.  Too bad, I was excited for this to work for my project.  Disappointing that the first unit I get is non functional.  Not sure if I want to try again.  I have no idea, yet, what the quality and reliability is for the HifiBerry products.  I don't like throwing my $$ down the toilet.

  I can't comment on a board that I haven't checked. As boards are tested after production, it is very unlikely that a board is defective. However, it can still happen for all kinds of reasons. I recommend to contact your dealer for a replacement.
  
  BTW: Your system won't run stable with a 12V/2A power supply, you should provide at least 3.5A. But this has probably nothing to do with the fact that you don't hear anything.

  I hear what you are saying.  I appreciate that you are limited as you don't have the card on your test bench.  But there are no additional devices connected to the GPIO pins or USB ports which would draw power.  Forgive my question, but where are you getting the Volts/Amps specs?  The HifiBerry Product page (https://www.hifiberry.com/shop/boards/hifiberry-amp2/) is weak on providing detailed specifications.  I would also note that the information and image on this page: https://www.hifiberry.com/docs/archive/connecting-power-supply-and-speakers-to-the-hifiberry-amp/  is not the same as the unit I have.   You'll notice from the image of my Amp2 that the CAPs are in different locations and the PCB layout is different.  The Speaker polarity posts are also not the same.  I don't know if I have a version before or after the unit shown on the HifiBerry product page.

  The Amp2 can supply up to 60W which (not at 12V). At 12V/2A, you have only 24W for both the Amp and the Pi. This means if you're running at higher volumes, there won't be enough power available for the Pi anymore.

  Understood, thanks for that clarification.  I've tried HifiBerryOS w/ no resolution.  Continuing to find a solution, I've seen a number of posts here that suggest that the issue with the Kernel version.  Can you comment on that?  If so, what is the last Kernel version that works with the Amp2 PCB?  Is this something will be resolved w/ an upcoming Kernel or is there a firmware update to your PCB?

  No, there is no problem with the kernel version. The drivers are in the kernel for many years already. There is no firmware update needed. 
  I recommend to contact the dealer your bought it from and let them replace the board. However, you should definitely get another power supply (even though I don't think that's causing the problem here).

  I have a new Amp2 w/ an 18v 2a pwr supply.  I have sound, but volume is low and very tinny, I have the volume at 50.  It was my understanding that this unit was an amp, i.e. not requiring a power amp.  What am I missing here?  I purchased this for a DIY streaming device for music in the backyard.

  "Volume at 50" is something I can't say anything about. There is no standard volume representation and I can't say what "50" is in Moode. From what I see in the "Audio information" is that Moode seems to use software volume control instead of the hardware volume control. This might cause this problem. I recommend to contact the Moode developer about this. It looks like a configuration problem (but I may be wrong about it as I don't know the Moode internals).

  Ok, I downloaded the latest HifiBerryOS (General->Software Update "Up to date 20210527)

  I have the same issue.  Volume is at 50% of the volume slider.  Low volume and tinny.  Now that I'm running your software, what's next?

  I'm sorry, it was never thought as an insult. It's simply normal that you have low volume at 50% setting.
  If you're missing bass volume, one of your speakers might be connected with inverted phase.

  Thank you, I've verified that the speaker polarity is correct.  Unless you can offer some other advice as to a solution, I can only conclude that the device is not what it's marketed to be.

  If this doesn't have an effect, there is clearly something wrong in this setup as there should be a clear difference in bass volume with one speaker reversed.

  That's what my issue is, poor sound despite speaker or speaker polarity.  I've tried different Rasp Pi 4s, speakers and speaker polarity.  This is the second unit that has not worked as expected.

  If you can't hear a difference between reversed polarity and normal polarity, the board is not the problem. I don't know your specific setup and I'm not able to tell you what's wrong, but another unit probably won't change anything. Even sending the board to us for a check probably won't make sense at all as defectives are very rare and it's almost impossible to get 2 defective units. I can still offer this, but most likely I only have to tell you that the board is just fine.
