Hi, I’m new to Pi and HiFiBerry, but not Linux. I’m looking to use a HiFiBerry DAC Bundle Pi 4 with DAC2 HD to connect to my whole house audio system and to access a music library on a Synology NAS. I expect to use the Pi’s web interface to create play lists and more complicated management tasks. I will use my own app to control the WHA system and do simple playlist and music selections on the HiFiBerry,  probably via MPD.

Before I make the order, I wanted to check to see if what I’m planning seems reasonable and did I miss anything in my order for this use?

  Doable: yes, but don't underestimate the effort for software development if you want to create your own stuff. I would rather recommend to look into existing software like
  - HiFiBerryOS (https://www.hifiberry.com/os)
  - Volumio
  - PiCorePlayer
  - Max2Play
  (and many more)

  Thanks for your quick reply and recommendation. I have a lot to learn here. There are a great deal of software choices.

  My thinking is to use HiFiBerryOS to start. It would provide a way to connect to the NAS,  a Web UI and MPD interface. Alternatively I could use Volumio which would provide a number of additional capabilities and APIs.  I can try each path relatively easily as long as I don’t go too far with app development on either platform. Am I understanding this correctly?

  Yes, both will probably do the job. Not sure what you want to do with your app, but you can easily control HiFiBerryOS from the web browser of your mobile phone already.

  That gives me enough to buy some hardware and get started.

  What am I doing? My WHA is a Crestron system. My "app" is the Crestron control side. I don't want to replicate complex functions on the Crestron side, but I do want to be able to do simple music selections and information displays on the same panel that I'm making WHA source selections, room selections, and volume control. If all this works well, I will replicate it as another WHA input so that my wife and I can make different selections in different rooms.

  Received the gear. I put it together, installed HiFiBerry OS, and was playing music from the NAS over the WHA in about 2 hours. Nice. We can now start playing around to find out what SW works best for us and integrating it with the WHA system. Thanks HiFIBerry team!
