Hi,
I was thinking of using multiple DAC+ DSPs as a 4 channel active crossover with dual toslink outputs. Is this possible? That way I can choose my external DACs / amps. In fact you could create this without a DAC stage. Just stream the DSP(s) outputs to the Toslink outputs.

HiFiBerry team While teoretically you could do this, you would have to use multiple Pi's for this.

David C. Snyder It seems like clock sync would be tricky for something like this. I think most people use audio interfaces with 4+ output channels. There are a number of these in the pro audio world.

Jvburnes Dave,
After several days of searching for every possible solution, I think you're right. A number of people in the active DSP world are converging on various kinds of pro-audio solutions like the Motu Ultralite MK4. I think it's almost a necessity since that kind of clock sync only really exists in the pro-audio matrix switching / routing world.
I would just stick with something like a miniDSP 2x4 HD, but I'm not sold on the quality of their DAC implementations. While the MK4 only has analog (and limited digital) I/O, their Sabre 32 Ultra implementation is pro-grade (perhaps Motu 8a?). MiniDSP does have a device with digital only output channels, the jitter is incredibly high -- probably a result of trying to sync clocks with external DACs.
Also I think the USB audio interface brings other obvious functions like analog in for situations when I want to record and when I want to use an analog FX loop like a tube buffer.
