Volume surge on crossfading

Hello,

My setup consists of the Logitech Media Server (LMS) running on Windows 10 feeding a number of RPis each with either a DAC+ Pro, or AMP2 HAT, and all running the HiFiBerryOS.

When crossfading is set in LMS, at the final second(s) of the transition (which is set at 10 seconds) there is a sudden burst of energy manifesting itself either as a momentary surge in volume, or a burst of noise.

I was certain that the problem was with the crossfading implementation in LMS, but, to my surprise, the latest HiFiBerryOS update to version 20200901 lessened the problem significantly(!), but not entirely, hence this post; to let you know that although to a much lesser degree, the problem still exists.

  Unfortunately I have to tell you that nothing has been changed on the squeezelite implementation for several months.
  
  As this is done on the server side, my guess is that there is some issue in LMS.

  Curious, since there was a significant improvement after HiFiBerryOS update, and LMS team thinks the issue might be in Squeezelite, where does one end, and the other start, and would the problem be in how one interacts with the other?

  Hi,

  I recently installed HifiBerry DAC + ADC Pro on Pi 4B with an AAmp60 hat. Amp is directly powered via iFi iPower power supply. Thought I'd try HifiBerryOS on this setup and I'm hearing a similar burst of noise when advancing to the next song. There is blink of lights in the DAC when I advance the songs, which coincides with the burst of noise. I'm playing music on my Synology NAS and I've noticed the same sound regardless of where I control the music (NAS player or HiFiBerryOS). 

  If I move to Previous or Next, I hear single burst of noise. But if I pause and start again, I hear two bursts of noise (like a double tap). This sound coincides with the red LEDs in the DAC. 

  I have Volumio on another setup with Pi4b + DAC HD without any issues and I I'm very happy with that setup.

  Is there any setting I need to change to avoid this or is this something with my setup? Wondering if this is something to do with HifiBerryOS or the DAC + AMP, since I don't have this issue on my other setup with Volumio + DAC HD combo. 

  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  This might be an issue with either LMS or squeezelite. Unfortunately we don't have a lot of experience here with LMS/Squeezelite. Therefore I can't say if there are any configuration options to Squeezelite that could help with this.

  FYI, I'm not using LMS or Squeezelite. Just straight up HifiBerryOS and Audio Station from Synology. I just tried playing content via bluetooth connected to my laptop (YouTube) and I observed the same when moving from one track to another.

  Ok,  it would help then NOT posting this in a topic that is talking about LMS. Bluetooth is still not very good, I recommend not to use it if possible. 
  I can't say anything about AudioStation. The web site doesn't say anything about the protocol that's used for this. How do you stream from this Synology device?

  Hi,

  Happy to document this somewhere else, but I posted here since the symptom sound the same. 

  I used Bluetooth to see if the problem goes away, but that is not the typical way I use it. 

  Synology sees the HifiBerry as another audio end point (along with my Denon receiver) and I select HiFiBerry as the output to play. This is exactly how I play it on my other setup with volumio + DAC HD without any issues.

  @SJNY: In my setup the volume change/burst of noise problem appears *only* while crosfading is set on, so the suspicion is directed at LMS/Squeezelite, but in your case it happens while simply doing Next/Previous, and that would lead to the DAC/AMP/HiFiBerryOS issue, no? I have a conversation with LMS/Squeezelite team opened here , but I'll be following this thread as I suspect (HiFiBerry team doubts notwithstanding) the problem could be with the OS/hardware, because, as you're reporting no such problem exists under Volumio. Thank you, all.

  FYI @HiFiBerry team; in an effort to eliminate some of the variables, I swapped out HiFiBerryOS for piCorePlayer (pCP) and the issue at hand is almost absent. Almost, because during some transitions there's still a short, "blip" like, transient that pretty much has to be listened for to be noticed.

  We might have a look if we can upgrade squeezelite in one of the next releases.
