Static IP address

Hello,

 

for some reason (e.g. security) I use static IP addresses for most of my equipment.

Here in the community I found this about 2.5 years old question that was never answered: https://support.hifiberry.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/360001477545-Static-IP-Configuration-?input_string=Static%20IP 

The there mentioned configuration file /etc/dhcpcd.conf is not available under the most recent Hifiberry OS. There is /etc/network. But within there is only one file 'interfaces.bak'.

So the question remains: is it possible to use a static IP address for the wired connection (ethernet) and how can this be configured?

  I'm sorry to say that but I don't know how to do this. Under Network -> Wired I just see the current value of the IP address.

  Hm, then the area with the IP address gets black but nothing else happens. Tested in different browers.

  Looks good. If you click on the IP address nothing happens?

  If I click on the IP address the are "IP address 192.168.0.214" shortly gets black and turns white again. Just a short blinking.

  Unfortunately I can't say what't wrong. You might try restarting beocreate and trying again:

  Hi Steamfan,

  firstly, my apologies for your issue with setting a static IP address. I am unable to replicate this condition here with my test setup so I need to ask some questions to troubleshoot it.

  Which browser are you using to access the web interface? Are you able to try this with another browser, and if so, does the issue persist?

  in the meantime I tried a couple of Browsers and operating systems:

   

  1. Mac OS X Catalina (10.15.6): Brave, Vivaldi, Safari, Chrome: no success in changing the IP address
  2. Mac OS X High Sierra (10.13.6): Brave, Safari: no success in changing the IP address
  3. Mac OS X El Capitan (10.11.6): Brave, Vivaldi, Safari, Chrome: no success in changing the IP address
  4. iOS (12.4.8): Brave, Safari, Chrome: no success in changing the IP address

  So I have to admit that the issue is unfortunately always reproducable.

  Is there a configuration file that I can change via command line? Which script is executed if the IP address is changed via Web UI? Maybe I can execute this from the command line directly?

  You have certainly been exhaustive in your trials, thank you. I'll provide you with details on how to change these settings manually in just a moment, but to know more about the actual issue, may I ask the following:

  In Safari, Chrome or other browser, please open the Web Inspector or Developer Tools, whichever appropriate for the browser, and switch to the Console tab. When you click on the IP address in the UI, do you see an error posted in the log? Logs from the Raspberry Pi won't necessarily show an error here because it appears to be a client-side issue.

   

  Here's how to set a static IP address manually:

  To set a static IP address for Ethernet, you first need to edit /etc/systemd/network/dhcp.network, where you should see something like the following by default:

  [Match]
  Name=eth0
  [Network]
  DHCP=ipv4

  Under [Network], remove the DHCP line, and add the following:

  Address=192.168.1.105/24
  DNS=1.1.1.1
  Gateway=192.168.1.1

  Obviously substitute these with whichever IP addresses you want to use. The /24 after the IP address is subnet mask 255.255.255.0 in CIDR format – if you need to use a different mask you can find the correct equivalent for yours easily with a web search.

  After this file is edited and saved, you'll need to edit your /etc/hosts file to also reflect the new static IP address.

  You should see a line like 127.0.1.1 wohnzimmerpi in the file. The latter is the static name of your product. Add a new line into this file:

  192.168.1.105 wohnzimmerpi

  where the IP address is the new static IP address you set before. Save these changes.

   

  When all of your changes have been made, run the following to restart the networking subsystems:

  systemctl restart systemd-networkd.service systemd-resolved.service

   

  Please let me know if you can make it work with these instructions, and if not, I'll be happy to assist your further. If you ever want to return to automatic IP address configuration and the UI is still not playing ball, just revert both files back to the way they were and restart the networking subsystems again.

  Thank you, this is already very helpful. I spoke with Daniel (HiFiBerry Team) and it turns out there has been an internal change to the way Ethernet IP addresses are set up and this has not been reflected by the Beocreate components (which handle the user interface). We will address this in a software update that should be out next week.

  In the meantime, you can set up a static IP address by following the instructions I laid out earlie, but instead of editing /etc/systemd/network/dhcp.network (which likely does not exist on your system) you should edit /etc/systemd/network/eth0.network.
