rpi4 was updated yesterday using rpi-update

GPIO was tested using gpio test utility without any errors.

Any ideas? Is the HIFiBerry dead? It's been just a couple of months since I bought it.

  My guess is that your update broke something. Try a fresh installation. There is no need to use rpi-update on an working system.

  I'm having the same problem with my AMP+.

  Same error message.

  (I updated the kernel using rpi-update because I wanted to try the new kms drivers with some eglfs issues I'm having with Wayland)

  I did a fresh installation with the latest Raspberry Pi OS image (2020-05-27) and on the first reboot I got the following error:

  snd-rpi-hifiberry-dacplus soc:sound: ASoC: CODEC DAI pcm512x-hifi not registered - will retry

  Then on the second reboot, the error I originally got was thrown:

  snd-rpi-hifiberry-dacplus soc:sound: ASoC: failed to init link HiFiBerry DAC+: -517

  Any thoughts?

  There's a problem with the 5.4 kernel and the old overlay that's stored in the EEPROM. We're working on this and hope it can be fixed in the kernel.
  There's a simple workaround for this - just use the overlay that's supplied with the 5.4 kernel by adding
  
  dtoverlay=hifiberry-dacplus
  
  in /boot/config.txt

  I also followed this guide:

  I disabled the onboard drivers, tried rebooting both with and without the dtoverlay line in /boot/config.txt but the same error is thrown.

  I can confirm adding dtoverlay=hifiberry-dacplus to confg.txt fixed my issue on a 5.4.51-v7l+ kernel with an AMP2

  S K: Either your SD card is corrupted (that would be my first guess) or there is some problem with either the Pi or the DAC. I would recommend to first try a fresh installation on a new SD card.

  I have the same problem with a HiFiBerry Digi after upgrading to Kernel 5.4.51-v71+

  Error in jourctl:

  Having dtoverlay=hifiberry-dacplus only changes the error message to:

  J S There is no update as there is no known problem with the Digi+. Trying to use the dacplus overlay won't work at all. You need to use the Digi+ driver.
  If aplay -l doesn't list the card, something might be corrupted and I recommend a fresh installation. You are using Raspbian - right?
  
  BTW: The error code -517 isn't a problem. This only shows that some driver is not yet loaded.

  I did a fresh install with upgrade to 5.4 kernel and it still gives me "ASoC: failed to init link HiFiBerry DAC+: -517" messages.

  Update: I did another fresh install, without upgrading to 5.4 (keeping on 4.19) and it works. So there really seems to be an incompatibility between the DAC+ and kernel 5.4.

  I have a HiFiBerry Digi on a pi3b and upgrading to kernel 5.4 broke mine with the same error too:

  All fine. However, you're tryingh to play a mono file on a stereo soundcard. That's what the aplay error message shows. aplay is not a good tool to test something. Have a look here for alternatives:

  Thanks, I can confirm that playback worked in mplayer. What through me off was the complete lack of controls and mixers in amixer and alsamixer.  Not sure I really looked before on my pi though so meh.
