HifiBerry DAC+ ADC to connect a turntable across various LMS servers and players (Pi3/Pi4)

If everything goes well, you’ll need 30 minutes from scratch… (done here on a Pi4)

Burn your SD card with the following max2play image (beta):

Now, follow these few lines:

However, if    arecord -l   gives you:

card 1: sndrpihifiberry [snd_rpi_hifiberry_dacplusadc]

instead of 

card 0: sndrpihifiberry [snd_rpi_hifiberry_dacplusadc]

Modify the following 2 lines in an alsa.conf file which is located in /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf

defaults.ctl.card 0   to  defaults.ctl.card 1

defaults.pcm.card 0  to  defaults.pcm.card 1

This will change the RPi built in input from card 0 to card 1 (much better to get some sound)

Chose your audio player and that's it!

No need to change the gain, everything is perfect.

  Hello. I am new to rasp pi. I have a(n) Rpi 3B+, HifiBerry DAC+ ADC (not PRO), and an old sony receiver STR-DE895. I have a free TAPE IN RCA jack on the receiver. I own two SONOS PLAY:1s. How to I get the Rpi3 to stream from receiver to SONOS? I want to be able to enjoy my turntable on SONOS. Thank you for your time.

  Hello. If you have an RCA OUT and want to stream music (and only music) to SONOS, I guess it should work! On my side I can stream music from my turntable toward Airplay and DLNA equipment including SONOS, Airport Express and Chromecast sound systems. If you want to get synchronisation with Video, it's another story! What do you want to do exactly? Don't you have a SPDIF digital output?

  I have a RCA out, and IN, on the MD/TAPE section back of receiver. I ONLY want to stream music from turntable. Not video at all. I saw the instructable ( https://www.instructables.com/Add-Aux-to-Sonos-Using-Raspberry-Pi/ ) on adding AUX to SONOS. I thought if I followed those instruction, since my amp would take the part of the Behringer pre-amp, that would be the way to go...? Or do you think this is the way to go: https://www.hifiberry.com/docs/projects/create-your-own-radio-station-with-the-hifiberry-dac-adc-and-icecast/

  I don't know this Icecast solution but I am curious about.

  On my side I just use max2play's image based on Logitech Media Server (LMS) on a Raspberry Pi (installed in less than 30 minutes). Here, LMS is able to stream from almost any source (music services, web radios, local files, turntables) to many clients in most formats (FLAC, PCM, Apple Lossless, OGG, DSF/DFF, AIFF, AAC, Muse, MP3/4, Opus...)

  You'll need to install some LMS plugins: Waveinput to route the sound from your turntable to LMS (thanks to the ADC function of your Hifiberry card) + Airplay/DLNA/Squeezelite to stream the sound to your Airplay/Sonos/SqueezeLite devices).

  Personally, I use several Raspberry 3/4s + Hifiberry DAC2 HD + DAC/ADC + QOBUZ subscription (FLAC 24bits/192khz) + Pro-Ject RPM turntable (local and streamed) + Cabasse & ATC speakers (no bass-reflex at all) + NAIM amplifier and life's good...

  I think I can do this... I want to be able to use the RCA (left/right) OUTPUT on DAC+ ADC, not input (headphone jack). Do you use this type of wiring? I have so many LPs that I want to listen to with my new Fluance turntable. As far as the hardware hookup, I would do this (?): Hifiberry OUTPUT to Sony's MD/TAPE IN, then setup the software to stream? Thanks again.

  You can connect the Hifiberry RCA OUT to your Sony RCA IN, allowing you to listen to music coming from any LMS source and/or use the Hifiberry Stereo Jack (in ADC mode) to convert the sound coming from your Fluance turntable (phono preamp needed) into one or several LMS streams (including Sonos). In this case you'll need a stereo RCA to Jack cable.

  Turntable => Phono Preamp => Hifiberry Jack (ADC) via LMS Waveinput => RCA out (to Amp) or Streaming via Squeezelite/Sonos/Airplay.

  Thank you so much for your help, Bernard. I think I will try the method: "...connect the Hifiberry RCA OUT to your Sony RCA IN, allowing you to listen to music coming from any LMS source...", since it seems like there will be less wiring.

  Be aware that LMS is just a software (server + client) that will run on your Raspberry. If you want to control it remotely, you will need a remote control like iPeng (not free) on an iPhone or Squeezer on Android. If you have a small diagram of the desired installation (Raspberry/Hifiberry/Turntable or other inputs/PreAmp/Amplifier/remote sound systems), I can check if it is realistic.

  Good afternoon Bernard. My Sony receiver has a PHONO IN. So that takes care of the PHONO PREAMP requirement, correct? I think I would go HiFiberry DAC/ADC RCA OUT to MD/TAPE IN. Then use WiFi to stream to SONOS (?). I have a spare android phone I can use as a remote. As a matter of fact I use this phone to stream my modded YouTube, and PANDORA, to SONOS using an app called AirMusic. Works really well.

  Using your diagram: RASPBERRY + LMS + DAC/ADC (WiFi), RCA to RCA then WiFi to SONOS.

  This is not clear to me... If you want to stream your music from your turntable to your Sonos sound system, you'll have to be able to redirect your SONY AUDIO IN (RCA) to its RCA OUT (can you do this?) and then to the Hifiberry jack to convert your analog music  to digital (via LMS Waveinput). By the way the music will never be synchronized with your usual speakers connected to your SONY receiver.

  Thank you. I will give the GREEN a try. I am also doing lots of reading to get this project working. If I get it to work the way I see it I will share here.
