On the newest hifiberry os version when using spotify connect the audio seems to have a sort of crackling sound. It's hard to describe, but it's a mixture of crackling and choppiness but is only very subtle.
I've rolled back to the previous version and it seems to sound better. I'm pretty sure i'm not imagining it but does anyone else have this issue?
There wasn't any change on the Spotify code. What sound card are you using? Did you enable the equalizer?
That's strange, perhaps my mind is playing tricks on me!
I'll try it again and have another listen to it.
It has happened again today, so I rolled back and it's gone again. I am almost certain there is a difference in audio and the change is also present even when I just do the security update.
I'm using the Beocreate 4-channel amplifier and I have not changed anything within the equalizer.
If there is a security update, it looks like you're using quite an old version. What version are you using?
I have rolled back to version 20200403.
But there shouldn't be any security update from 20200403. Unfortunately I can't say where your problem might come from. Maybe we'll find something until the next release...
That's odd. I soon as I rolled back I changed the automatic updates to security only and it immediately restarted and took me to the newest version (Can't remember the number, sorry).
I'm fine waiting for next release to see if it will change as I'm pretty happy with this version at the moment anyway :)
I can confirm that on my system Spotify via Airplay sounds much better than Spotify Connect on HiFiBerryOS
Hi! I can confirm the same as Matt, here. It is nothing subtle. Sounds much better via Airplay. Spotify's connect via the App is distorted.

Sounds like it is a bit of a common problem then and I am glad I'm not the only one that's experiencing this issue.
Hi. I' m testing here right now...because the equalizer was enabled in my case.
If the equalizer is enabled (not modified but enabled) the sound is worse . But if the equalizer is disabled I have the same sound quality. If something changes, I am not able to appreciate it.
What you mean "not modified but enabled"? from what I can see I can add/remove/disable single filters. I can't see a main eq switch anywhere.
@Matt: Are you using a DSP sound card? If that's the case, you can't disable it from the UI.Login via SSH and run
/opt/hifiberry/bin/alsa-mode SOFTVOL
I noticed that Airplay upscale everything to 32 bit so I tried to add "format S32_LE" to Alsa conf and now spotify seems good.
HiFiBerry team I can try that but can you also give me the command to revert it back?
You should not revert this back at all. ALSAeq should be disabled on DSP sound cards. While it's disabled in the UI, the default config in the last release had it enabled - that's a bug.

@Pau: If Matt is using a DSP sound card, it's not available in the UI ;-) With the DSP, all equalisation is handled directly on the DSP, therefore the ALSAEq UI isn't available in this case.

don't know.. on airplay sound stage seems a bit wider and high frequencies more crystal. On spotify connect it's high freqs are muddy. it's very subtle but I can hear it.
@HiFiBerry team in spotifyd.conf the mixer specified is DSPvolume, is that right or I should change it to Softvol?
If you're using a DAC+ DSP with a supported DSP program, DSPVolume is correct as volume control will be handled directly on the DSP in this case.
The Softvol will be 100% - just passing the signal.
