Hi,
I followed the exact instructions (https://www.hifiberry.com/docs/software/configuring-linux-3-18-x/) and the audio output works. The only problem is, that the music plays really slow and I can't figure out what the problem is. Did anyone else experience something like this before?

I just noticed that just a few milliseconds before the pi shuts down the music plays in regular speed. I don't know if that helps.
If you want run Kodi, I would rather recommend to install something like LibreElec or OSMC as they usually include additional patches specifically for the Pi.

thanks for the quick reply. I would do that, but I need Raspbian for other applications. Even if play music on Raspbian (not in Kodi) I have the same issue.
Maybe the product identification in the onboard EEPROM is wrong? I have a HifiBerry DAC+ Zero. When I run 'aplay -l' I get the following output:

There is no EEPROM on the DAC+ Zero. aplay output is ok. Either something in your Raspbian installation is broken or the Pi has a hardware problem - my guess would be the first. Try a fresh installation on a new SD card.

Yes, that's normal.
The problem was pigpiod! I removed it and now everything works just fine.
Dammit! I found out that the issue I am working on for a week now is the same! After searching for Hifiberrry and pigpiod I found this post. If I only had known earlier...
Please make that information more prominent. I had the same issue, bit I was always searching for "Hifiberrry pitched down sound" and "HifiBerry wrong sample rate".
If you face the same issue run the command:
sudo systemctl disable pigpiod
This will configure your raspberry so that pgpiod is not started at system start. But then you are not able to use this software to write to and read from GPIOs. You can still do that using a different was,
or you might be able to configure pgpiod in a way that it uses only the "free" GPIO pins that do not collide with the reserved pins for Hifiberrry.
In my case I had the problem on my Raspberry Pi4 with HifiBerry Digi2 Pro, but this will most likely also apply to other Hifiberry boards, such as Hifiberrry Digi+ pro or Hifiberry DAC.
For your reference:
start pigpio (only until reboot):
stop pigpio:
start pigpio automatically on boot:
stop automatic start of pigpio on boot:
Thanks for posting this. I was having a slow playback issue with my Amp2 board, and was searching for solutions when I found this page. In my case, I wasn't even using pigpiod, but I was starting it (because I use it other boards, and I start them all with the same script).
Disabling it solved my problem.
Some more reading suggests that pigpiod interferes with audio because it takes over one or both of the PCM and PWM features of the system. By default it uses the PCM, but passing "-t 0" on startup will cause it to use PWM instead. (It uses the device as a source of timing information.) A very quick test says that using "pigpiod -t 0" lets me run it and still use my hifiberry, but it was only a quick test.
