HI i've a dac+ pro, I installed hifiberry os for pi4 on sd card, I connected to a monitor via hdmi, but so far there is nothing happening apart from a green light in the box. How do I get things going?

HiFiBerry team Dod you see a rainbow screen when it starts up? If not, there's probably something wrong with the SD card or the software on the SD card.
What did you do to flash teh SD card?Best regards,
Daniel

eamonnsingleton Hi Daniel thanks for your reply, I don't see anything on the screen. I put software on the SD card by plugging it into an android device as there is no slot on my PC, maybe that affects the software?

HiFiBerry team Hi,
you need a special SD card writer software. You can't just move the files onto the SD card on your Android device. You need to do this on a PC with a SD card writing tool like Etcher, Win32DiskImager or similar:
https://www.hifiberry.com/docs/software/how-to-write-an-image-file-onto-a-sd-card/
If your PC doesn't have an SD card slot, just use an USB card reader:
https://www.hifiberry.com/shop/accessories/cardreader-goobay/
(they are called card reader, but all of these can also write SD cards).
Best regards,

eamonnsingleton Hi, I bought a card reader and loaded hifiberry os onto the card. I used balena etcher to do this because win32 didn't work, also I formatted the micro sd. There is nothing working yet, now there is a red light showing in the hifiberry box.

HiFiBerry team In some cases, the system hangs on first boot. In this case, just unplug power and plug it in again. Then it should work fine.

HiFiBerry team What version of the Raspberry Pi are you using? Do you see something on the screen?

eamonnsingleton I'm using Pi4, nothing happens on screen which is connected via hdmi

HiFiBerry team Ok, did you download the Pi4 image? There are also Pi3 images that won't work on the Pi4.
If it still doesn't work, just try installing a plain Raspbian (https://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/raspbian/) and check if this boots.Best regards,
Daniel

eamonnsingleton Hi, I finally got the Pi4 to boot, I did a full format on the SD card, installed Raspbian, and changed HDMI command in config text.
Possibly it was actually booting but not communicating with screen via HDMI. Is it a good idea now to go ahead and install Hifiberry os for Pi 4 ?

HiFiBerry team Hi,
it should work exactly the same way: Writ the card image to the SD card and boot from it. What kind of screen do you connect? I've never seen something that required HDMI configuration. Do you use the right HDMI port (this is the default settings)?Best regards,
Daniel -
eamonnsingleton I have a TV screen with HDMI plugs (as well as some others), on the PI I connected HDMI next to power supply, I think this is recommended. Searching internet I found a suggestion to uncomment the HDMI command in config.
Thanks for all your help

eamonnsingleton So now I have a pink Hifiberry logo on screen, there is text at the bottom of the screen (web interface is ready at IP).
Where do I go from here? I assume I'll need to add some software to the SD card to make the system accessible. I tried adding some like Picore Player and Moode but I get a message telling me there's not enough room on the SD which is 16 Gb. What size of card do I need?

Eamonn.

HiFiBerry team You can't "add" software to the SD card. HiFiBerryOS IS the software that runs now. You access and configure the system with a web browser:
https://www.hifiberry.com/docs/software/setup-hifiberryos/
Best regards,
Daniel -
eamonnsingleton Ok, so if I want to use Moode, Picore player, Roon or another how would I set that up?
regards,
Eamonn
-
HiFiBerry team Moode and piCorePlayers are different distributions. You need to install these on the SD card - alone. You can't combine multiple distributions. The Roon server is a software that need to be installed on a PC. I'm not sure what exactly you're trying to do. Why do you want to install PiCorePlayer?

eamonnsingleton I will need some way to access music either from Tidal, Spotify, Qobuz or from internet radio stations. I would like to stream digital content, convert it to analogue using the Hifiberry then connect analogue output to an amplifier and speakers. The YMPD pane offers some options but it seems to need a password to use it.

Eamonn.

HiFiBerry team Spotify is already integrated into HiFiBerryOS. You can just use Spotify connect to connect to the system (Spotify subscription is needed).
A Web radio interface is planned for the next release that will be available in about 3 weeks.
For TIDAL, you can use Roon. You need to setup the Roon server on a PC or Mac (this is how Roon works: https://roonlabs.com/howroonworks) . The system running HiFiBerryOS will just act as a Roon player.
There is no password required for YPMD. This is just a user interface to MPD which is used in the background to play web radio. If you know how to configure mpd, you could also use it to connect to a NAS, but this is not yet implemented in the GUI.Best regards,

eamonnsingleton Hi, hifiberry is working now and I'm using Roon. At the moment it's working through the PC and not through HDMI to screen.
I would like to try using Moode or Volumio but the SD card won't take more software, it's a 16 Gb card running Hifiberry OS. If use a USB stick to load additional software, will that work?
regards,
Eamonn.
-
HiFiBerry team If you want to use other software, you need to use separate SD cards. You can't put different distributions on the same SD card.
Roon will never work "through HDMI to screen", you need a Roon controller. This can be either the Roon application on your PC or the Roon app that you can install on your smartphone.
The HiFiBerryOS system is just a Roon player that plays the music and displays metadata.Best regards,
Daniel -
eamonnsingleton Ok so if I understand correctly, the Hifiberry will still work if the SD card has no Hifiberry OS but has Moode, Volumio or some other written on the SD card?
regards,
Eamonn
-
HiFiBerry team Sure, the HiFiBerry sound cards also work with other distributions.
