DAC+ Zero no sound

Yet another "no sound post". I've read through the configuration guide and all of the old forum posts with no luck.

I'm running the Hifi Berry Raspbian Lite build with a Pi 3 B+ and a DAC+ Zero plugged directly into the GPIO pins.

All of the configuration instructions went well (seemingly), but I get no sound. I can see volume controls in `alsamixer` and `amixer` but when I play audio with `play -n synth sine 1000` or `aplay audio_file` I don't hear anything. What are some good next debugging steps?

  You should NOT see any volume controls in alsamixer as the DAC+ Zero does not have any volume controls. Most likely you did not disable the onboard sound.

  Is it not disabled by default in the hifibery rasbpian image?

  How would I go about disabling it then? I've followed all the instructions found here: https://www.hifiberry.com/build/documentation/configuring-linux-3-18-x/

  Still get no output when I run `aplay /usr/.../*.wav`

  Frankly I don't think that's the issue, considering my /boot/config.txt is just

  "

  and all I see in "aplay -l" is

  Hi,
  
  it is strange that you see some volume controls with these settings as the DAC+ Zero doesn't have any.
  What's the output of

  amixer

  Something is strange in your setup. The hifiberry-dac driver doesn't expose an "Master" volume control. What did you configure in /etc/asound.conf or ~/.asoundrc?

  It had lots of settings (pasted at the bottom of this post). I also tried changing it to the simple setting suggested in (https://www.hifiberry.com/build/documentation/configuring-linux-3-18-x/), and even after rebooting I still see the volume controls. However I do see a new error when I run "aplay audio_file":

  "play -n synth sine 1000" works as before and still produces no audio output.

  Hi, there might be a problem with either the Raspberry Pi, the DAC+ Zero or the connection between both. Unfortunately it's not possible to say which of these causes the problem. If you have anther Raspberry Pi, try it.
