Is the following hardware what I need?

So I want to build a raspberry pi based music player, I have thousands of FLAC files ripped from my CD collection, so I primarily want to be able to access my files on a portable harddrive. I have an external DAC with optical and coaxial inputs. So am I right in thinking a Pi and the digi2 pro or digi+ standard boards plus a case would be what I need? If I get the digi2 board then I could also get to DSP board for signal processing? I would connect the player by optical cable to my DAC. Am I correct in thinking I could select music using for example the volumio app on my phone? Would appreciate it someone can tell me if I'm on the right track here.

  In general, you're right. However, most disributions don't offer a native app for mobile phones, but just a web interface. It's best to test different distributions and find out what works best for you 

  Note that the only distribution that have support for the DSP add-on directly integrated is HiFiBerryOS,

  Thanks for clarifying, does the HIFIberry OS have the ability to play files stored on a USB storage device? Or only network drives?

  It does. However, I strongly recommend to test this before buying a HiFiBerry sound card. You won't get any sound otput but you can check if HiFIBerryOS is the right choice for you. Also understand the support model of HiFiBerryOS: https://hifiberry.com/os#support

  I assume if I only use the pi and hat in the digital domain then sound quality would be mostly determined by my external DAC, which I am very pleased with. I guess the only thing I can think of that could cause some interference would be the power supply for the pi?
