hard to type on this rpi 2. im getting sound drops. the sound just cuts for a second. im using the preconfigured image and it still does it. heres the dmesg info

this is happening on the toslink. it seems to come and go as well. almost like its selective and only happening with certain songs, but im not sure. let me know what other info you need. this problem is really irritating.

It's hard to day if this is a playback problem or a problem between your DAC and the Digi+.

Try playing a simple sine wave with sox:

apt-get install sox
play -n synth sine 1000

Do you still get these drops?

This is extremely cruel to listen to but after the first 2 minutes it only has done it once. then again it sometimes seems to take a while to happen. I will leave it on and see if it starts doing it again. when it does happen though it normally keeps happening over and over for a few minutes at a time.

Also, certain apps are not working with the preconfigured image of raspbian. audacious throws up "asla error:

No suitable mixer element found. snd_mixer_find_selem failed." although mplayer and cclementine both work fine.

the music is played over a drive through usb with its own power supply. The buffer is also set extremely high.

Then it looks like the drops come from the application not sensing data fast enough to the sound interface. What do you use for playback?

Try copying your files to the SD card and play it from there. If this is working, something with your USB disk is wrong.

it seems to happen hours into use. i had a friend suggest it was ram related. so far today it hasnt started while listening to music

im not sure what i use for playback. im using a sennheiser headset over the digital optical line running on clementine. ill work on your suggestion and attempt to solve it thanks for your help.

Try what one? are you seriously trying to sell me something when i cant get the one i purchased to work? i kow now its not electrical. i put the whole setup on a ups and used a usb tower to make sure the usb has its own electricity. ive tried changing out the microusb power cord with a higher quality one. its either the digi card or the hard drive, but the hard drive reads/writes at 3 gigabytes per second and ive increased the apps buffer too. what other info can i give. im starting to get tired of playing with this thing.

note-when it starts dropping i can restart the song and it stops for while. then after a while it starts dropping again.

im not using a dac (not that i know of) and i ordered this over amazon so i guess im stuck with this thing. it works. ill just have to restart it every 30-60 minutes. from what ive seen on the forum this is a isue with the board and happens pretty frequently.

What device are you connecting it to? It must be some kind of DAC, otherwise you would not hear anything. What exactly is the device you're connecting it to?

I don't know where you read something in the forum, but this isn't an issue with the board that happens frequently.

If you ordered from Amazon: What dealer did you order it from? Are you sure this is a genuine HiFiBerry board?

well that explains a lot i guess. im not using a dac at all and i didnt know i had to use one. the pi has a hifi digi board on top of it with the optical line running into my wireless sennheiser docking station (which may function as a dac but isnt one to my knowledge). i started using a player called exaile and most of my problems went away. the sound does seem low sometimes and i have to turn it up or down from time to time, but my original problem seems to of been solved. my board is legit and seemed to be sold by you through amazon. now that it works what kind of dac am i supposed to be using? my sennheiser headset is called rs750 i think. everything sounds pretty great now but id get a dac if you feel it is really necessary.

we don't sell directly on Amazon, but some of our resellers. However, I know that there are cheap Chinese clones available on Amazon that are NOT HiFiBerry boards. These seem to create a lot of problems. That's why I ask which dealer you bought it from. You should see this on you Amazon order.

it was sold by chicago electronic distributors and purchased from amazon. its still ocassi occasionally onally dropping but not nearly as often once i changed media players. the product is a hifiberry digi + standard

Okay. I finally got had a chance to look up some more stuff and sit down at a real computer. The Sennheiser RS 175 RF does have a internal DAC. I've never had any issues like this with the Headset and I'm 99% sure that the headset isn't causing the issue. Though I do suppose that the HifiBerry and the DAC inside the Sennheiser might be incompatible or causing issues with one another? I don't know. I just know that this has been way more work than I'd imagined. So far I've got the thing working and the sound isn't dropping often enough to be a headache (usually once every couple of hours and I'll I have to do is restart the song to fix it). I'd still like try and get down to the bottom of this issue or at least understand what is causing the problem better. Why would one media player work really well and others won't work at all (audacious won't work at all with the card for some reason). I'm pretty sure the card is legit. It came from amazon and not some independent seller. The best I can come up with is that either the card isn't able to handle the load or the internal DAC in the Sennheiser can't, but that doesn't really explain why some media players work and others don't. That makes me think it is somehow a configuration issue. However, I reinstalled the OS several times and even used the Preconfigured Image provided by your team. I've tried replacing all the various power supply components just in case it was a power supply issue, but that didn't change anything. It also seems that sometimes the volume is slightly different from use to use. I can turn it on and it will be slightly louder or quieter and I have no clue why or if its just me. I'm not sure its just not me imagining it or that the songs themselves are just at different volume levels. i have the media player set to... fix that.. whatever you call it (where is makes all songs the same volume), but I don't know if it works. The volume difference seems to be from use to use and not from song to song though.

So far the most success I've had is with experimenting with different Media players. That to me says something about the Card is just not working correctly or at least not user friendly. Especially, when I'm running it on a pre-configured image. Anyway, I'd love to know what else I can do to make sure my listening experience is as good as it can be.

The device sounds really good. Good bass, crisp sound, and if the sound wouldn't randomly drop it would be perfect.
