Rasperry Pi2 Rasbian + Digi = rainbow screen when boots

I have just bought HiFiBerry Digi+ for my Raspberry 2 with Rasbian.

Unfortunately when HiFiBerry is installed I my raspberry doesn’t boot. It stops at the beginning so I can see only the rainbow screen.

Without the hat Raspberry boots and runs properly.

I found similar case “Rasp Pi2 OpenElec 6.0.0 DAC+ rainbow screen” and followed the advice

I was trying several different Jessie images, power supplies and sd cards. I also used HiFiBerry installer but the result was the same.

The “raspbian-preconfigured.img” from this web site which starts properly and works but after updating ( apt-get upgrade) my raspberry didn’t boot as the others images.

The test tone generator https://www.hifiberry.com/guides/sd-card-images/ also boots and works.

I’m confused and I don’t know what else I can do.

  Hi BTL

  From your description it sounds like there is a hardware issue somewhere. The question is wither it lies with the Digi+ or the Raspberry Pi2 & SD card.

  If you remove the Digi+, are you able to boot into the Linux distribution installed on your SD card? If so, then can you then replace the Digi+ back onto the Raspberry Pi2 and still boot? If it at this point you have rainbow screen then yes there is definitely something at fault with your sound card.

  I have the same problem.

  Raspbian with test tone generator boots fine and outputs tone on the optical output.

  Raspbian with automatic detection of Digi/Digi+/DAC+/Amp/Amp+, also boots fine, but after the apt-get update and reboot it sticks at the railbow square screen.

  Hope you can help me.

  I am having the same issue. Downloaded the latest OSMC build (April), put image on sd card and got the rainbow. If i remove the hifiberry, it boots fine. Tried updating that way then installing the hifiberry again but got rainbow on boot again. The raspbian and tone generator work fine with hifiberry installed. Also tried openelec image, openelec windows installer, osmc windows installer, and hifiberry installer for osmc and openelec. All fail to boot past the rainbow.

  Hi BTL,

  seems to be the same problem, we can guide you through reflashing the EEPROM, if this fails, the board might need to be changed. I create a ticket for you as well.

  There is an easy workaround for this problem. You can simply say the Linux kernel to ignore the content of the EEPROM by adding the line

  force_eeprom_read=0

  to /boot/config.txt (or whereever this file is located on the distributions you're using).

  I have exactly the same issue. Adding the above mentioned line to config.txt works but I wonder if there is a "real" solution for this issue as I have to apply this "patch" to each new image I use.
