Amendments to existing RPI install guide?

I would like to have the ability to play audio (and possibly other stuff) through my circa 2007 AV receiver. it cant do bluetooth or airplay (mostly an apple household).

was looking at belkin and other devices, when my google searches started bringing up RPI projects...

essentially, i would like the best audio-performing setup via optical, with bluetooth (minimum) and airplay / shairport (optional / value-add). i have spare ports on my receiver to do this.

i have read through guides such as this (most are relatively similar):

http://www.instructables.com/id/Turn-your-Raspberry-Pi-into-a-Portable-Bluetooth-A/?ALLSTEPS

or

http://www.instructables.com/id/Raspberry-Pi-BluetoothAirplay-Audio-Receiver-combo/?ALLSTEPS

The latest RPI3 includes bluetooth, so assuming a similar config will work.

The biggest question is that these guides do not seem to be utilising the optical port. Is this much a config change? Or just a different port number, from "aplay -L" or something?

Thanks
