I installed a Digi+ on a RP3. In the instructions it is adviced to lower the volume to 80% by using amixer. However the suggested output Digital is not present only 'Tx Receiver'. However, when I replace Digital to 'Tx Receiver', I get the error "Invalid Command". Any suggestions?

I too just got a HiFiBerry Digi card for my RP2 and like you trying to follow the advice to drop the volume to 80%.
Looking everywhere I could to find out why it's not working. Finally back here to find someone having that same problem, signing up to ask for help etc.
Anyway re reading the advice I see that its for "Mixer controls for DAC+"

Offcourse I read on forehand that the setting was for the DAC+! But if this is so much different for the Dig+, why not include the instruction? Now I had to search high and low to find the correct syntax? Specially since the same command with the only available output generates a invalid command error...

Hi Erwin,
it is not included in the documentation because the Digi+ does not have any ALSA volume controls. It outputs digital digital sound without altering the data in any way. Therefore you can't change the volume using amixer.
I think Kodi has an integrated software volume control that can be controlled with the + and - keys, but I'm not sure. However, I would recommend for best audio quality to control the volume on your amplifier/pre-amplifier.

Thanks for the comment. Since I am a newbie on Linux in General, and on the Raspberry in particular I tried to do I correct right away. I must have been over eager and not take notice that the setting was JUST for the DAC.... :\
Alsdo, becuause of the Bluetooth issue, which I found out later, I was convinced it was this particular setting that caused the distortion. Any light on when this issue is solved?

the Linux kernel problem has been fixed some times ago already. However, I can't say when the OpenElec developers will release a new version with the fix. I recommend checking the OpenElec forum, maybe the developers can say more about their release plan.

I was triggered by this remark in the guide: OpenElec seems to set the mixer to 100% by default. This can result in distortions of the music output. Therefore you should set this to around 80%. Login and use the following command:

No, all Digi+ models send the output data exactly as the application sends it. There is no ALSA volume control on any Digi+
