Today, I got a weird behaviour: Every few seconds, the stereo channels got swapped in the output (both SPDIF and Toslink). There were no dmesg messages or the like. I even rebooted, didn't help. Then I plugged the power of the RPi (cold reset). After it, it is working again.
I'm posting this mainly if somebody else has this problem.
This sounds really strange. Which Raspberry Pi are you using? What is the Linux kernel version?
Right now there is a lot of work on the RPI firmware, maybe a bug has been introduced with this.

I've now got this behaviour occassionally and can reproduce it if I do heavy IO on the SD card (cat a large file to /dev/null or write from /dev/zero to sd card with dd). Sometimes, unfortunately, it also happens if do "nothing".

* changing power supply
* going back from WiFi to ethernet

there was a bug in the I2S kernel driver:

This has been fixed about 2 weeks ago. You need to update your kernel to the latest version. Interestingly you are the only person I know that had this issue with a RPI2. All other reports were only RPI3 related.

After executing `rpi-update` and installing the latest kernel, it seems to work now.

Raspberry Pi 3 had the same problem. Fixed after rpi-update. Sounds beautiful now.

The apt repository with the kernel doesn't get updated so often; when I had the problem, the latest raspberrypi-bootloader (where the kernel is in) was from 20160315, see http://archive.raspberrypi.org/debian/pool/main/r/raspberrypi-firmware/
rpi-update OTOH always installs the most up-to-date version from https://github.com/Hexxeh/rpi-firmware
IMHO normally you should stick to apt only, except if you need otherwise (like in this case).
As a side note, now that I looked again, a new kernel is now also available in the apt repos since May 13 (20160506), which I've now installed via apt and also works; so no need for rpi-update anymore.
