How do I update from HOS64-Alpha 7 to Alpha 8? It is not clear how to use the update script in the release section.

I would personally just flash the latest alpha that is 8 as we speak.

I am perfectly aware that I could just flash another image. However I have containers and configurations running that I would like to retain. Therefore, how can I update seamlessly? Or is it not yet possible ?

Not yet, but the next version will be the first beta and it will support the normal upgrade via the UI. But we still need to implement a new backend for this

No, we don't have a fixed roadmap. As this is a "hobby project", we can only work on this when our schedule allows it.

Nevertheless, thank you very much for your efforts. I really enjoy using this HifiberryOS as opposed to constantly fiddling with a custom maintained software stack on the shell that keeps breaking.
