Hifiberry DAC+ Pro WIFI/WLAN Problem?

Hello,

i bought a Hifiberry DAC+Pro because of the dual clock support but i am not able to get wifi/wlan working with either moode or max2play, also read about the same problem with rune audio (after kernel update).

I had a Cirrus Logic Audio card before, that worked finde with my Pi2 also with WLAN, but since i changed the card, there is no way of getting it to work.

Although moode and max2play claim, that it will.

Know another guy, who has the same problem.

Checked my connection data several times, everything right :/

  Hi Daniel,

  in general, some wifi dongles have problems with the Raspberry Pi. Is the wifi connection working when the DAC+ is not connected/were you using before the same setup with the other audio board?

  Hello Anton, i use a Edimax EW-7811UN, that worked before and should work without problems with the pi.

  But i try to get it to work without the dac+ now, will get back to you in a bit

  You should as well check if your power supply is strong enough for both the wifi dongle and the DAC+, this could as well cause your problems. The DAC+ does not need much power, but if it is already on its limits, it might cause some problems.

  Hello Anton, thanks for the tip, just tried another psu, it did not work.

  i managed to get the wlan working without the dac+, by shutting the ethernet and the power management off. But when i connect the hifiberry it still wont work

  Hi Daniel,

  do I understand this correctly. Even without the DAC+ your WLAN stick works only if Ethernet is turned off? This still looks like a problem in your power supply. Could be the external power supply, but it is also possible that the onboard voltage regulator of your Raspberry Pi has a problem. I recommend testing this with another Raspberry Pi.

  Hello Daniel,

  it would start with ethernet turn on, but i wanted it to start faster.

  Any way to check the voltage regulator on the pi without buying a new one?

  Okay, i made a test. I disconnected the DAC+Pro and used my older Wolfson/Cirrus Logic Audio Card. This one connects without problems with both supplies. So i doubt its the psu

  Hi Daniel,

  the power consumption of different boards can be a bit different. If your power supply or the power supply on the Raspberry Pi isn't stable enough, you can see a behaviour like this without the card being "broken". As discussed above, you can use our money-back-guarantee if you want to return the original card. Do you want to do this?

  Hello Daniel, yes i would like to return the card please. I have testet it with 3 different supplies and two raspberry pi´s it wont work stable :/ (the few times it worked it sounded very good)

  Hi,
  I also had problems with my raspberry+hifiberry-dac and raspberry+hifiberry-amp+ openelec setup and Wifi (Edimax EW-7811UN). The raspberries could find my Wifi but were disconnecting after a few seconds. However, no problems when connecting to other Wifis (for example wireless hotspot from android phone).
  -> there was an conflict with the IP adress between various devices in my wifi network

  My solution: reset and reinstall my wifi router, and fixed IP adresses for all devices. Now all my hifiberries and other electronic devices work together in harmony :)

  I´m just installing a PI2 with +pro , Volumio as software - Original Power Supply and original WLan dongle by raspberry (the white ones) - but do not work as Airplay-Receiver.

  Then I canged to Edimax Wlan Dongle and I have a connection now and everything works fine.

  Maybe the RaspDongle is broken or the drivers are missing. 

  Need help

   

  2. Question 

  I used this Hifiberry Installation Software - as much as i can see at the moment this IS2 driver is still on "NONE" - is this correct?

  As long as the output comes from the DAC+, the configuration is correct.  The green LED lights up at boot, but turns off when the player software stops playback. If your installation works well, then everything is ok.

  I still have the problem with the Orginal Rasberry Wlan Dongle which will not work - as I said in the update maybe it ist so new that there are no drivers within the Volumio Software. It seems that it as no led so I can´t see if it it broken.

  Hi Daniel,

  I am also having a problem with my Dac+ Pro and Wifi.  Wifi works fine without the DAC+.  When I plug in the DAC+ to the 40 pin connector, it still works fine.  When I enable the DAC+ with dtoverlay=hifiberry-dacplus (which I assume turns it on during boot), the wifi no longer works.  I am using an Edimax EW-7811Un USB wifi adapter.  

  I have tried two power supplies, but neither worked (one is 2.0A, the other is an iPad 2.4A supply).  Both should be plenty to power wifi and DAC+.  If I comment out the dtoverlay line in /boot/config.txt and reboot, wifi works again.  My router assigns a static IP to the RPi based on the wifi MAC address, so there is no conflict with other devices on the network.  

  I am using raspbian jessie with n updated Linux kernel 4.1.15-v7+

  All of my music is stored on a NAS, so I cannot play anything without wifi.

  Update: Everything seems to work fine over wired ethernet.  Perhaps there is some specific conflict with the DAC+ and Edimax EW-7811Un dongle?  Can you recommend a dongle that is known to work with the RIp2, raspbian jessie, and DAC+?

  Hi Jim, I have been having identical problems to the ones you describe and I am also looking for a USB wifi adapter that is compatible with the DAC+Pro under Jessie distributions. So far I have not been able to find a compatible adapter. Have you had any luck? At the moment I am stuck with using volumio 1.55 (wheezy based) without the onboard clocks or volume control because I do not have an ethernet connection.

   

  Any suggestions?

  I have found that the official Raspberry dongle works without issue with Jessie and the HiFi Berry DAC+.  The price on amazon.com was 2x most other dongles, but it's well worth the lack of hassle.

  Thanks Jim,

  The problem seems to be a conflict in Jessie between Dac+pro and dongles with the realtek chipset. The official rpi dongle uses a broadcom chipset, so it works fine.

  I have also now discovered that the ralink 5370 chipset also works fine, and it is in some cheaper dongles at half the price of the official rpi dongle.

  I am now using rpi2 and dac+pro and ralink dongle with moode player 2.4 (jessie kernel with dual clock drivers) and getting good results.

  Hello,

  I have noticed that the Edimax WiFi dongle will not turn on with some power supplies, when the voltage drop in the USB cable from the power supply to the Pi and to the USB port becomes too great.  So, not because the power supply cannot source enough current, but because the cable from the power supply to the Pi has too much resistance.

  Having said that....

  Can someone explain the issue with the WiFi and the os in simple terms please?  I am not seeing a problem at the moment, but I would like to have a basic configuration, including WiFi, that will work even if I change to a different music player, or update the OS. Is the problem with the Edimax dongle, the dac, the version of the OS?

  I plan to buy a couple additional hardware sets, so I would like to be reasonably sure I have something that will work even if the software changes.

  My current very basic configuration is a Pi2B, DAC+ (not the PRO), EDIMAX EW-7811UN. With a Sandisk flash drive plugged into a second USB port, the power used is very modest, barely 0.4A while playing (peaks around 0.6A during startup)

  Even with a relatively poor power supply, I have not noticed any WiFi problems so far.  I have tried some versions of Xbian, Rune Audio, and Volumio.

  Sample output from uname-a:

  Linux runeaudio 3.18.7-3-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Fri Feb 13 06:23:21 MST 2015 armv7l GNU/Linux

  Linux xbian 4.1.13+ #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue Nov 24 09:06:29 CET 2015 armv7l GNU/Linux

  With a combination of a power supply which has a low voltage output at the source, AND a poor USB power cable (cable too long or too thin to carry the supply current), the Edimax dongle does not turn on.  This is because the USB supply voltage specification is fairly tight, 4.75V minimum (I think).  The tiny wires in some cheap USB cables have a high resistance.  There can be a significant voltage drop from the power supply to the USB port where the WiFi dongle is plugged in.  If the voltage drops too low the dongle will not turn on.  (tested with the Edimax dongle)

  On the other hand, the Pi2 seems to work happily with a supply voltage below 4.75, probably because it has its own voltage regulator.  So everything on the Pi2 would continue working (I assume including the Ethernet), even when some USB devices would not.

  The same problem.

  One thing can help you is to disable automatic WIFI channel from router. Manually assigning any channel helps.

  Just wanted to confirm that deactivating auto channel in my router did the job. Now my RP3 with internal Wifi and HifiBerry dac+ pro and Volumio work like charm!
