Ihave got as far as rpi-update but cannot get modules into etc/modules as it says I have no permission. I have no previous experience of using the terminal.

you should be root first. Then edit /etc/nodules using nano /etc/modules
BTW: /etc/modules is not needed for modern kernels. You need to edit /boot/config.txt and add the device tree setup:
