mpd configuration and alsa mixer

I have been testing for a while my new Hifiberry DAC+ in combination with Raspbian. I don't want to installe Volumio or another "audiophile" distribution since I like Raspbian.
In the meantime I read a lot of tips and tricks to set up the mpd.conf file.
With some setups I got some audible distorsions and overall the sound quality was not good. In the meantime the sound is better but I'm a little bit confused about all the options and in the meantime maybe I have also some "listening bias" :-)
I want to play on my hifi system (Yamaha AX397 amplifier) predominantly mp3 files which have different sampling frequencies and bit rates.
I have some questions about the section in the config file relevant to the audio output:
samplerate_converter "Fastest Sinc Interpolator"
volume_normalization "yes"
audio_buffer_size "2048"
buffer_before_play "20%"
filesystem_charset "UTF-8"
id3v1_encoding "UTF-8"
gapless_mp3_playback "yes"
auto_update "yes"
max_connections "20"
decoder {
plugin "mad"
enabled "no"
decoder {
plugin "ffmpeg"
enabled "yes"
input {
plugin "curl"

audio_output {

type "alsa"
name "Hifiberry"
device "hw:0,0"
mixer_control "PCM"
mixer_device "hw:0"
mixer_index "0"
mixer_type "None"
format "44100:16:2"
# mixer_control "Playback Digital"
# auto_resample "no"

1. It is recommended to use: format "44100:16:2"?
2. In the alsamixer I set the volume to 96 and my mixer_type is "None" since I want to fix the volume in order that one can remotely control the volume only using directly the amplifier. Furthermore in the alsamixer I can turn on the Playback option: 0 or 100. Is 100 recommended? The louder sound isn't that bad.
Other options which I miss or which could be useful?

I would be very glad for any hints!
