Hello,
After receiving Hifiberry DAC DIY and solder pins and a 3,5 pigtail, I try to enjoy but got only awful noise instead of music or nice system bips.
I installed the last raspbmc (13.2 dated Aug 19 2014) and run the two step on Hifiberry site:
https://www.hifiberry.com/guides/updating-the-linux-kernel/
http://www.hifiberry.com/guides/hifiberry-raspbmc/
No problem except proxy issues.
Someone has any idea ?
Thanks for help!

HiFiBerry team What kernel version are you using. It seems, that a 24-bit bug was introduced in one of the August kernels. Basically this is a XBMC bug, but it was fixed by disabling 24bit playbay in the driver.
Do you need it also for video? Otherwise I would recommend a audio-distribution rather then XBMC-based system.

Hi Daniel, thank you for your answer.
pi@raspbmc:~$ uname -a
Linux raspbmc 3.12.29+ #714 PREEMPT Wed Oct 1 23:11:38 BST 2014 armv6l GNU/Linux
Yes I'd like it for video too. HDMI output for films ans hifiberry DAC for music is just fine.
What do you suggest? get back to older version of raspbmc?
I chose raspbmc because it seems to be the most documented about hifiberry issues.
Best Regards,

electro tl (I did try OpenELEC but could find a way to set up the Hifiberry DAC) -
HiFiBerry team Hi Electro,
I have uploaded a pre-configured image of OpenElec here:
http://www.hifiberry.com/files/images/openelec-4.1.6-preconfigured.zip
Can you try this one?

Hi Daniel,
Thanks for this, on saturday night.. ;)
I downloaded (slowly, on a ship, via satelite...) and tried the image.
After copying the lines in .config/modules-load.d/hifiberry.conf :
snd_soc_bcm2708_i2s
bcm2708_dmaengine
snd_soc_pcm5102a
snd_soc_hifiberry_dac
Now I can select the sound through the Hifiberry DAC and it's sounds nice!
Thank you for that.
Have a nice Sunday.

kixkhara Hello Daniel,
after doing a selfupdate my raspbmc did the same ... i only got an awful signal noise like a bad FM-transmission.
I found this thread and installed openelec by taking the above img. Today the kernel was automaticly updated at startup and now i get the same disaster as with the raspbmc ... only an awful signal noise.
HDMI & analoug output is perfect but i want the hifiberryone. Are there some problems with the new kernel & hifiberry-DAC??
Greeting from Germany,
Oliver -
MSX Bas I had the same white noise in Openelec 4.2.1, I downgraded to 4.1.6. to fix it... No idea if it is related.
Do you have any errors during booting? I saw a strange error in the first few lines in the boot-screen -
HiFiBerry team The issue is with the handling of 24bit audio in XBMC. There is a known bug in XBMC. Newer Linux kernels have the 24bit playback activated for the HiFiBerry cards. However it seems that the 24bit issue in XBMC is still not fixed. As long as this is not working, I recommend staying with the current kernel version and OpenElec 3.1.6
I also recommend telling the developers about this issue. I heard that they have an idea what to do, but I don't know if and when they will fix this.

Martin Zweers Does this apply to all RPI en hifiberry models running raspbmc?
My RPI B model with the Hifiberry DAC-rca was working fine for weeks. After the last reboot which probably upgraded raspbmc it fails with a awful noise. I followed the suggestions above but no luck. -
HiFiBerry team Dear Martin,
this is a general XBMC issue with 24bit playback. It looks like there is a patch coming, but I can't say when. This is up to the XBMC and Raspbmc developers. The only option you have at the moment is going back to the previous release and an older kernel.

Karol Łobaczewski Hi!
Does anyone know how to get rid of this white noise coming from HiFiberry DAC+ in Raspbmc? I bought DAC+ to have great sound from my raspberrypi and now I only have this noise. If there is a problem with 24 bit playback, is it possible to change bitrate manually to 16bit ?? Please help! I want to hear music instead od this awful noise!
Regards
Karol -
HiFiBerry team Hi Karol,
if you just want to listen to music, I would recommend a distribution that is focussing on music playback only. These are usually much lighter. Have a look at Volumio, RuneAudio, PiMusicBox.
If you want to stay with XBMC, the easiest way is using the pre-configured OpenElec from here:
http://www.hifiberry.com/guides/sd-card-images/
On Raspbmc you need to downgrade to an older kernel. This is not so easy to do. However I was in contact with the Raspbmc developer, a fix for the 24bit issue is coming. I just can't say when.
Best regards

jk Hi Daniel,
I've got just the same error.. Actually I installed your mentioned pre-configured image with OpenElec but it did not solve the problem :(
Any idea? Or just waiting for the developers? ;)
Thanks -
Joost Brok Sad, I ordered a DAC+ and having the same issues with Raspbmc, after fixing the first issue that both DAC and DAC+ were shoing as output in raspbmc. Hmm. Any ETA on this issue or upcoming nightly? Otherwise I should go to Musicbox of volumio because I only use it to play songs through airplay at this moment. -
Joost Brok Okay, got it working!
Follow the instructions here to get the latest Kodi fix/build: http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=176043&pid=1837164#pid1837164
ssh to your pi and use the following commands (copied from blogpost);
If not already enabled, download and run enable-kodi2:
Code:wget http://goo.gl/G4EG8M --no-check-certificate -O enable-kodi2.sh
sudo sh enable-kodi2.sh
To install Kodi build, SSH to Pi:
Code:wget -O kodi-14-20141115-nc4.tar.gz http://goo.gl/ZiGnLs --no-check-certificate
pv kodi-14-20141115-nc4.tar.gz | tar xzf - -C /home/pi/.upgrade
sudo cp /home/pi/.upgrade/kodi-14-20141115-nc4/{fixup_x.dat,start_x.elf} /boot
ln -sfn /home/pi/.upgrade/kodi-14-20141115-nc4/xbmc-bcm /home/pi/.xbmc-current
sudo reboot
Nice! -
jk Hey J, hej Daniel.
Could not get it working. Tried a lot, but as I am running OpenElec the kodi trick did not work for me.
I just installed a fresh preconfigured OpenElec as mentioned by daniel. The Hifiberry actually plays sound, but there is a white noise as a layer above the music :-(

Any idea apppreciated. -
HiFiBerry team Hi,
if you run OpenElec, just use our pre-configured image from here:
http://www.hifiberry.com/2014/10/pre-configured-openelec-image-for-dacdigi/
Best regards

jk Hi Daniel,
thanks for your reply!
As mentioned in my previous post I already did that. The DAC+ itself is detected and working. That is not the problem.
BUT I do have this white noise. I guess it is due to the known 24bit issue. But as far as I understand I should be fine with the 3.16 kernel. Doesn't work, though..
Cheers. -
HiFiBerry team Dear jk,
the OpenElec image should work without noise. You just need to turn off automatic updates.
Best regards
Daniel -
m k Dear all, I just installed the DAC on my model B running raspbmc and I have the same problem (noise instead of sound). I understand there will be a fix eventually. I'd like to ask you though: is the fact that noise comes only when there should be proper sound (playback or 'clicks') a good indication that I did the soldering right? ;) -
eric vogel Are there any news about that problem? -
HiFiBerry team Dear Eric,
our pre-configured OpenElec image should work. I also know that Sam from Raspbmc is working on including the patch. However I can't say when other developers will release their version. I recommend asking Sam directly in the Raspbmc forum.
Best regards

jk Hi Daniel,
one more time I installed the pre-configured image.
I am now able to play webradio streams and music via DLNA without any problems, BUT as soon as I start a MP3 on the file system I do have the noise problems again. It sounds a bit like when you play music on a too high volume at a weak speaker .. hard to describe ;-)
Do you have any idea?
Thanks a lot!
jochen -
HiFiBerry team Hi,
this is very strange. I have no idea what could be the reason if these problems occur only with MP3 files. I think it is best to ask the OpenElec developers. Maybe they have an idea.
Best regards
Daniel
