Hey,
Has I just got my DAC+ and am excited to use it. Has anyone managed to get it working with pi Musicbox or are we still waiting for support?
Cheers,
Dave

HiFiBerry team Hi David,
I guess, most distributions will need some time as we just started shipping this week. However, you can try updating the Linux kernel by yourself and configuring it as described here:
http://www.hifiberry.com/guides/hifiberry-software-configuration/

Jean Harrault Hi,
Same issue with Runeaudio, the DAC+ is not working, even after upgrading Archlinux kernel. Does anyone succed to make it work with RuneAudio ?
Cheers, -
HiFiBerry team Hi Jean,
have you updated there kernel as described here:
http://www.hifiberry.com/forums/topic/updating-raspbmc-and-similar-distributions/
Have you configured the module in /etc/modules?
Best regards

Tamas Boros Hi,
I just got my DAC+ RCA, but it doesn't seem to work.
I tried with Volumio 1.4, then use my old RPi to update the kernel (I followed this guide: http://volumio.org/volumio-raspberry-pi-b-plus/ ), but even though the modules were set properly and I turned on I2S an selected "sndrpihifiberry" as an output, I had no sound on the RCA output. After that I tried Volumio 1.41 which should support B+ by default, but still no sound on the output after setting it.
Is it possible that Volumio just doesn't support HifiBerry DAC+ just yet? Or did I missed something?
I also triedaplay -l
and the output is as described on this website, but when I try to play a wav file, no sound...
Please let me know what else can I try!
Thank you,
Tamas -
HiFiBerry team Hi Tamas,
when you update the kernel by yourself, you should NOT configure something in the web interface. Don't configure I2S in the web interface. This doesn't load the right modules.
Just configure /etc/modules correctly, reboot and post the output.
I just got feedback from Michelangelo from Volumio that the next release with native DAC+ support will be ready soon.
Best regards

Tamas Boros Hi Daniel,
Thank you, leaving the settings as they are and updating the modules file manually helped, because now I hear something.
However it sounds like playing the music twice as fast, but also skipping every half second... I can't really explain, so I recorded it. It's playing Get Lucky (FLAC) like this: https://soundcloud.com/borostomi/dac-issue
I already disabled Volume control mixer, I don't really know what other settings I should try...
I'll try to find an MP3 file and see if that's any better.
Thank you,
Tamas -
Tamas Boros Update: mplayer plays the file just fine, so I guess the DAC is OK, I just have to wait for the new Volumio release.
Thanks again!

Tobias Scharmann Hi - received and installed my DAC+ yesterday.
I'm using it in a Squeezelite client under Raspbian.
I tried the published Installation procedure - no sound.
I tried software updates (apt-get install update AND upgrade) - no sound.
It took a Kernel update to get the Hifiberry to work.
Now it's running fine.

David Beetham I have my DAC+ sort of working...
Using pimusicbox, have updated the kernel, and updated /etc/modules and the blacklist. Still two issues -
1 - /etc/alsa.conf keeps getting rewritten on boot so the card number is removed. Perhaps the device is not being correctly recognised?
It always leaves it like this after boot -
pcm.!default {
type hw
card
}
ctl.!default {
type hw
card
}
Running aplay -l gives me -
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
ALSA lib conf.c:1686:(snd_config_load1) _toplevel_:5:1:Unexpected char
ALSA lib conf.c:3406:(config_file_open) /etc/asound.conf may be old or corrupted: consider to remove or fix it
*** glibc detected *** aplay: munmap_chunk(): invalid pointer: 0xb6cf8e38 ***
Aborted
Adding 'card 0' instead to each block fixes this -
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: sndrpihifiberry [snd_rpi_hifiberry_dacplus], device 0: HiFiBerry DAC+ HiFi pcm512x-hifi-0 []
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
Now, however, I don't see the pcm5102a module just the pcm512x module. Anyone an idea what I'm doing wrong? Does it have to be pcm5102a-hifi-0? It doesn't sound as good as I thought it might and was hoping this could be the issue.
David -
HiFiBerry team The PCM512x module is correct for the DAC+, the card is configured correctly.
About the alsa.conf: This file is not automatically generated by the system. It must be some process from the PiMusicBox distribution that overwrites the file. You should ask the PiMusicBox developer. I guess, he hasn't adapted the distribution for the DAC+ yet.

David Beetham I think the issue with sound I was having was because the volume controller on the pimusicbox UI was set to max giving me some clipping, but when the volume is reduced the sound is much better.
I'll ask the pimusicbox developer about the alsa.conf and post any solutions here. Thanks for your help. -
Stéphane Rodriguez Hi Daniel,
Got my DAC+ Jack, installed it, got the green light and had it play the nasty test sound for 600 seconds (provided by your team). alplay -l shows the correct drivers. But that's pretty much it. Every attempt to make it sing result in a catastrophic crash. speaker-test, aplay, mplayer or any kind of stimulus turns the LED off and provides no sound at all. Same with Volumio. No LED but everything else seems correct, i can select the hwhifiberry, but no sound when played.
Thanks for the hard work!
Stéphane -
HiFiBerry team Hi Stephane,
in this case ist it a software/configuration problem. Have you upgrade the kernel and configured /etc/modules correctly like shown here:
http://www.hifiberry.com/guides/hifiberry-software-configuration/

luc pauwels Hello,
Followed the instructions to get my DAC+ running...
At the phase were I have to enable the external Soundcard it goes wrong all the time.
Answer Yes or NO hangs up Raspbmc.
The only choice is removing the power.
Raspbmc comes up again but cut my keyboard and mouse...
thanks for any help! -
HiFiBerry team Dear Luc,
please check post the output of
aplay -l
uname -a

Tamas Boros Hi Everyone,
I'm using the DAC+ for a few weeks now (with Volumio) and I have to say, I'm really impressed!
I have only one issue: If there's no music playing, after about 10 minutes the LED turns off on the DAC+ and no sound is coming out from the box until I restart it.
Does anyone else experience this?
Thank you,
Tamas -
vambier Hi Everyone,
I got my DAC+ and installed it. But I can't get it to work. I installed raspbmc so that it runs from an usb flash drive.
I followed the instructions on the following page :
http://forum.osmc.tv/showthread.php?tid=15674
I updated the modules, but after I put the lines :
snd_soc_bcm2708
bcm2708_dmaengine
snd_soc_hifiberry_dacplus
in /etc/modules and reboot it doesn't start anymore. I also can't connect to it with ssh anymore.
Is this because I'm running off of a flash drive?
Hope someone can help me.
Thanks!
Hilbert -
HiFiBerry team If it doesn't start at all, most likely the SD card got corrupted. In this case you might need to re-install. Never tried the setup with a separate USB stick as it seemed quite complex.

vambier Daniel,
Tried clean install a couple of times, but it just doesn't work. It works fine up until I configure the DAC+.
Hilbert -
HiFiBerry team What is your kernel version? Have you disbaled LIRC?
Best regards
Daniel -
vambier Daniel,
Have to look up the kernel version. What is LIRC?

hch1 Hi there,
My DAC+ works fine with Openelec 4.1.6 preconfigured sw.
Cannot find details of the used DAC chip specs. Are they available? Where can I find them?
Any measurement results to be published here?
Looking forward to reading here soon.
Hch1 -
HiFiBerry team Dear HCH1,
measurements depend a lot on the use case (sample rates, bit-depth, pre-amplifier stage, ...). However you can expect a SNR of more than 100dB.
Best regards

dmueller Hi All - I'm experiencing the exact same issue regarding not booting after rpi-update, etc. I have installed a fresh version of RASPBMC (flashed to sd card), selected install to usb. I then boot normally and update according to the instructions above. Once I execute the steps and reboot, I only received the small raspberry logo on the upper left of the screen and the device does not boot.
I would like help figuring out this scenario.
THanks,

HiFiBerry team Hi,
one user reported, that he had to upgrade the whole system first and then run the kernel upgrade.

bernard.gigon Hello,
I used the piCore distribution and it worked like a charm
From unpacking until the player is visble in the Squeezebox interface : 20 minutes including download and image of the distro on a 512 Mb old Sd card.
Perfect !
I just had to find the Ip adress of the player, go to the web page, change the setting to select "Hifiberry DAC+" (Not DAC) in the list - that's all !
I have made a case using Lego - I will try to make somethink with aluminium, just need to find out the best design.
It's now synchonised with the other players and sound is very good, at least comparable wih Squeezebox Touch.
In relation with an LMS running on a Vortexbox home made server + squeezer on android for the remote control - definitly the best audiophile solution you can get for your money!
Bernard -
HiFiBerry team Dear Bernard,
it would be nice to see your Lego case, but I'm also very interested in the final aluminium case.

phil.balaam Hi all
I've been trying to get 2 B+/Dac+ setups working with raspmc and openELEC and I'm posting here in the hope that someone will have some ideas that might help. Can I add that I'm by no means a linux expert (I can follow instructions well enough I think although I am starting to wonder about this :-) I have 2 B+/DAC+ test beds at the moment and symptoms are common to both so I'm pretty certain its not rogue hardware.
RaspMC
Cant get it to work at all :-(. Using latest download from raspMC and I/m pretty certain I've managed to upgrade the kernel OK. However as soon as I turn on external sound card support in the raspmc configuration utilities XBMC hangs and there seems to be no way of getting it back. If I reboot then XMBC fires up but hangs again with no USB keyboard support and no SSH or HTTP servers running so I think its crashing. I'm re-installing again to make a note of all the version numbers and kernel version before I try to enable the external sound card again.
OpenELEC
Getting sound out on openELEC has been too successful! - The volume levels ar ridiculously high (+20dB or more) and there is a load of digital "shash" when not playing something.
It seems like the gain setting in the analogue side of the dac has been set to maximum as a -10dBU test tone easily goes into clipping on about 10% volume (XBMC volume setting). There are also frequently gaps in the music which sound like low bandwith streaming buffering, except that its sitting on a wired 1000baseT network and there are no issues if I switch to HDMI out or use my original Pi/berry/openElec setup (model B not B+).
Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. The berry is my favourite sounding DAC out of all of the Pi dacs at the moment :-)
Quite happy to provide info or logs and try stuff out with some pointers - Its the only way to learn these days :-)
Many thanks for putting up with this waffle :-) -
HiFiBerry team Dear Phil,
the easiest way is to use this pre-configured image:
http://www.hifiberry.com/2014/10/pre-configured-openelec-image-for-dacdigi/
Turn off automatic updates, because 4.2 has a bug (that's why the sound is way to loud).
Best regards
Daniel -
phil.balaam Hi Daniel
My apologies for not coming back to you sooner and thanking you for your prompt response and the info (which worked by the way, at least I know all the hardware is OK :-).
Now to see if I can get it working with RaspMC.
