Hello,

can I connect the hifiberry directly to a power amp? It would need to have software volume control.

  Hi Markus,
  
  the DAC itself does not have a volume control. Therefore you need a software that implements volume control, e.g. Volumio. Full signal output level of the DAC is 2Vrms.

  yes, but will the quality degrade with turning volume down? Or does it retain the whole digital resolution, just at lower levels?

  Changing the volume by software will - at a certain degree - degrade the quality. As the DAC uses 24 bit, it will still perform very well in many situations. Therefore reducing the volume by 10dB will not have a major impact on sound quality.
  For best quality, an analog volume controller or a preamp is recommended (a good quality stereo poti is enough).

  Then I will have to wait for your next circuit, a dac with volume control. I plan to connect directly to a power amp. Right now I use a ESI Dr. DAC which does that, but I prefer a internal solution. Less cable mess and 2 free USB ports.
