It used to work....

I have created an SD card from a minimal Debian installation and the DAC used to work. Then I had to recreate the SD card because of errors on the card. No, backup but I had written down all the steps I used to create the original.
I followed: http://www.hifiberry.com/guides/hifiberry-software-configuration/ for the HiFiBerry. But, no sound. MPD works and thinks it can use the card.
uname -a

Linux raspberry-pi 4.0.6+ #799 PREEMPT Fri Jun 26 14:47:28 BST 2015 armv6l GNU/Linux
and then after stopping mpd:

speaker-test -t sine -f 440 -c 2 -s 1

speaker-test 1.0.25

Playback device is default

Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels
Sine wave rate is 440.0000Hz

Rate set to 48000Hz (requested 48000Hz)

Buffer size range from 16 to 131072

Period size range from 8 to 65536
Using max buffer size 131072

Periods = 4

was set period_size = 32768

was set buffer_size = 131072
  - Front Left
But no sound.

amixer sset Master 100%

amixer: Unable to find simple control 'Master',0
The first time it was easy to get it installed, what should I do to troubleshoot this?
