Today, we got a nice Yamaha DSP-A2 in our lab. I have to say that I love the haptic of this Amplifier. While it can't decode the latest sound standards, it is really nicely build.
However it does not work with the Digi. The DSP-A2 shows "data format error". We will now try to figure out what kind of flags or formats the DSP-A2 is expecting. I hope we can provide a software fix for this, but I can't say yet.

HiFiBerry team Update: It's working! The DSP-A2 seems to be one of the rare devices that can't auto-detect the sample rate. Our current driver did not indicate the sample rate in the SPDIF status bits. We will now create a patch for the driver that should be included in the Raspberry Pi kernel soon. -

I've got a fairly old Yamaha receiver (RX-V595RDS) and recently bought a RPi2 + digi+ board but until total I was unable to get the thing to work. I've tried Volumia and Kodi but the receiver still says 'data error'. I've used the toslink connection with several cables and also tried the coax interface using a rca cable. The Receiver works perfectly with my 'Squeezebox Duet' and Samsung Blueray player on toslink.
The driver seems to be working, the toslink connector on the digi+ glows red.
Will the fix for the DSP-A2 also work for me?
When will a new kernel be available?
What can I do to get it to work?

HiFiBerry team The change was merged into the Linux kernel 22 days ago. It is already integrated in the latest firmware. Did you already do a kernel upgrade? What is your kernel version?

nanya Ok, so I did lots of search, but nothing helpes with DD and AC3. I have to turn off passthrough option in settings DD compatible receiver DD(AC3) to hear some sound, I assume rpi decodec sound, and of course it is only stereo, no 5.1 or something... Any idea?

HiFiBerry team You need to enable DD and DTS in the export settings. If you're using OSMC, check with the developers if they included the passtrough-patch. I know OpenElec uses an additional patch to enable passthrough on the Raspberry Pi.

Misch Hi.
I've got a Raspi 2 and Digi+ with Openelec 5.0.8. I also own a (old) Yamaha RX-V595RDS wich has no hdmi support. The DSP-A2 is ~ about same age as my receiver is.
Is this Fix in the Kernel of Openelec 5.0.8?
The Kernel Version over ssh says:

we can't say which patch is included in which OpenElec release. However as the patch has been released 6 weeks ago, I would expect that it is already included. If not yet, it will be included soon as OpenElec uses the official kernel sources.

i asked in the kodi/openelec dev forum about your patch and it wasnt in openelec 5.0.8 or the dev builds with kernel 3.19.x.
the current kernel is 4.0.x and they commit your patch in this kernel.

Stereo, DTS, Dolby Digital, all works fine with my old Yamaha RX-V595RDS!
im very happy. now i have to check what to do, that the patch to be integrated in stable releases.

My receiver (Yamaha RX-V2095RDS) has the same age as the Yamaha RX-V595. I can't figure out how to get my RP2 with digi+ to work. In the beginning my receiver's message was: data error. But now after upgrading to openelec 5.0.8 it looks like it doesn't work anymore (no toslink light and spdif signal). What can I do?

If not, check the output of vcdbg log msg
Most likely the modules are not loaded correctly.

HiFiBerry team Ok, the card is detected ok. Maybe you have to re-enable it in the settings. Did you check the output settings in the audio menu?

Misch Hey DG,
Openelec 5.0.8 won't work. The hifiberry patch (wich old yamaha receivers fix to work) isn't in the kernel. So you have to go to the kodi/openelec dev builds. In kernel 4.0 the patch is integrated.

bestguy62 My goal was a raspberry connected to the amplifier so if You start the amp, raspi is started too. And vice versa.
The problem could be the SD-Card which can be corrupted after hard shutdown.
After tries and tries with picoreplayer, which ist using kernel 3.18.7 i ordered max2play (They also have a read-only-module. Costs 10 €), run rpi-update (resulting 3.18.14+), and all is running out of the box. They also have a read-only-module.

I know, that this a very old thread, but as of yesterday, it suddenly became relevant for me.
I have fulfilled an old dream: I bought a pair of really well preserved and beautifull Red Line 140 B&O speakers.
Fun fact: I started out in search of a pair of C40/C75/CX50/CX100 for a Beocreate project, but ended up with a pair of RL140 - sometimes life has a life of its own :-D
But, this means that I had to dig up my old DSP-A2 to power them.
I have an old Pi and thought, that I might be able to make a sweet (and affordable) streaming device with some of your products?
What would you recomment?
I will (in the foreseeable future) want to send music from my iPhone 11 Pro via Airplay to setup.

HiFiBerry team If you just want to activate the RL140 without additional filters, I would just recommend the Amp2 instead of your old DSP-A2 (nice amplifier, I have one staying around here).

David C. Snyder The AMP2 seems reasonable to me as well. In theory, the Yamaha DSP-A2 can produce 5-6 dB more output than the AMP2, but since those speakers are rather efficient (93 dB at 1 watt), you will already get up to 107 dB per speaker from 30 watts of input if the speakers are in good condition. :)

Jesper Steen Nielsen - Nibe Avis Okay, I'm trying to keep an open mind, but I'm just slightly baffled by the fact, that the AMP2 should be able to (almost) match the performance of a 19,5 kg (relatively) high quality amplifier a the near top of its line back in the day?
I found an AMP2 on raspberrypi.dk and I'm almost tempted to shell out the cash to try it out :-D
If it does not work out, I could always use it with my B&O C40 :-D
BTW: The speakers should be en VERY good condition, after being "refurbished" a couple of years ago - the previous owners worked at B&O ;-)

HiFiBerry team It's hard to compare these two. Modern Class-D technology is much more efficient than older Class-AB amplifiers. Therefore, things became smaller and cheaper. Keep in mind that in most use cases, you won't require the power of the DSP-A2. It won't run at full volume.
I can tell you, that our speakers here in the office are powered by an Amp2, even though there's also a DSP-A2 (that's only used for some testing today). -
