Hi, this might help all with Raspi B+ and openelec,
My output was to loud by default in relation to other sources
just
vi /storage/.config/autostart.sh # in this file you need the following entry
/usr/bin/amixer sset 'PCM' 220
this sets the output to 84% you can play between 200 and 255

Our own OpenELEC does this automatically on startup, but sets it to 100%.

StephenP I have tried a variant of this to try and control my volume on start up (of OpenElec 6.01) as it is excessively loud through my Amp+.
using either
/usr/bin/amixer -c 0 cset numid=1 65%
or
/usr/bin/amixer sset Master 65%I can set the channels easily enough to a suitable reduced start volume by the same method, but the Master volume appears to be ignored. I can control the Master through a terminal and SSH from another machine, but I would like to start up with a reasonable volume and have that persistent through reboots. I don't want the very loud start up beeps or to have to alter volumes by SSH everytime.
Due to the way openelec has been set up it appears that alsactl store does not work as it cannot find /var/lib/alsa/asound.state to save settings, and this file is not persistent between reboots if one does create it.
Does anyone know of a way to control the volume and make the default level much lower than 100% and persistent between reboots?

MSX Bas in my experience using % will reduce the volume with every reboot (e.g. 85% of 85% in first reboot, 85% of 85% of 85% after 2 reboots)
So better use the values between 200 and 255 in your startup script, and not %
