it depends what you mean with "free". The connector blocks all GPIO pins. However not all pins are used. You can see which pins are in use here:

Luxxxy GPIO2-3 are used by our products for configuration. If you are experienced with I2C, you might add other slave devices, if you a a novice, we don’t recommend this at all.
GPIOs 28-31 are used for the sound interface. You can’t use them for any other purpose.
GPIO = PIN number? -
HiFiBerry team No, the GPIOs are NOT the pin numbers, but the GPIO numbers. You see these numbers on your picture in the text, e.g. pin 40 is GPIO21.

HiFiBerry team That's correct. Note that also pin 27 and 28 are always reserved (and also used at our DAC+ and Digi+ boards). Even with a board that does not use them, they should not be used for anything.
