Pi B+ with Digi+ problems

Hi,

My Digi+ arrived today, yaay!

I have some problems to get it working though. I ran through the software setup guide and it seems fine. I can't get anything playing and I do hear a faint white noise at all times throught the toslink. At the moment I have HDMI connected as well as Toslink, not sure if this could be a problem. I do get proper sound through HDMI.

OS: Installed Raspbian from NOOBS image (updated to latest kernel as said in the software install guide)
OUTPUT: Toslink optical

My Digi+ shows a green light on the hardware.

Output from 'aplay -l':
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****

In /etc/asound.conf I have tried both hw card 0 and 1. Using card 0 I get HDMI sound through mplayer and aplay. Using card 1 it seems mplayer nor aplay can find the output device but I get HDMI sound with omxplayer.
pcm.!default  {
type hw card 0
}
ctl.!default {
type hw card 0
}

I think my problem could be just specifying somewhere which card to use for output, for example while using mplayer or omxplayer. Anyone here have any ideas what I'm doing wrong or what I can try?
