Silence & missing modules

I am also getting a fatal error message during boot:

FATAL: Module snd_soc_bcm2708 not found

the other modules load.

These are the modules listed in /etc/modules:
snd-bcm2835
snd_soc_bcm2708
snd_soc_bcm2708_i2s
bcm2708_dmaengine
snd_soc_pcm5102a
snd_soc_hifiberry_dac

./check-system.dac gives the following output:

Playing WAVE 'sin1000_48khz.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 48000 Hz, Stereo
root@BlackPi:~#

No sound is produced.

Issuing this command:
amixer cset numid=3 2

then repeating ./check-system.dac produces the expected sound through the (HDMI) TV. I assume that means that the sound was previously being sent to the analogue jack instead.

Commenting out the snd_bcm2835 line in /etc/modules and rebooting results in only one soundcard being found:

**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: sndrpihifiberry [snd_rpi_hifiberry_dac], device 0: HifiBerry DAC HiFi pcm5102a-hifi-0 []
Subdevices: 0/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

but still no sound.

I've checked the cable for continuity (it's fine) and that the pcb tracks to the 3-pin connector next to the label (which I'm using for the sound output) are connected to the corresponding pads for phono/jack sockets (they are). I've also checked the voltage at the P3 connector (4.8V by my meter).

I'm hoping it's just that missing module that's causing the trouble.

Thanks in advance for any help.
