I have noticed thousands of empty files named "noalbum" in my music directory, I believe they are created in folders that actually contain music albums.
Is it HiFiBerry OS that creates them and is there a way to stop this?

Yes, HiFiBerryOS creates them
No, you can't stop this. It's needed to make sure it doesn't try to find album information again.
Thanks for your reply, google doesn't know what they are, so I found them suspicious.
What happens if the mounted music directory is read-only?
Shouldn't you consider maintaining a OS-side DB with the visited folders instead?
I am a bit concerned about the fact how much space is taken up by this process - I've noticed thousands of these files. Another drawback is the mess. And, as mentioned above, possible wrong OS behavoiur on r/o shares. If two HiFiBerry OS-es use the same share, their behaviour could be erroneous, too. And the last one that I could think of - the resetting of folder statuses, if needed, is time consuming process.
