Volume controls are completely ignored. The Amp 2 is stuck at full volume!
This is a fresh install of Raspbian, with hifiberry set as default alsa mixer. Everything i can see is turned down...
Am I missing something obvious?

This looks good so far. What exactly do you mean by "stuck at full volume"? It still outputs at high volume even if the mixer settings are set to zero?

Ok, reading you message again you ARE playing at high volume. I would recommend to do a fresh installation on a new SD card. We haven't seen this before. However, we have seen all kinds of crazy behaviour with corrupted SD card.

Yes, the audio heard out of the speakers is high, regardless of any mixer settings.
I've just tried a fresh install using a new SD card. Set the audio to hifiberry as default, connected the Wifi, opened an audio track on YouTube, and initially it seemed to let me control the volume using the 'Digital' slider. But then almost immediately it was ignoring it, and playing at full volume only again...
This is very strange. I haven't seen anything like this before. You control the mixer controls using "alsamixer"?

Same problem here.
I'm using volumio but the speakers are playing at VERY HIGH volume regardless of what I set on volumio GUI or alsamixer.
I would guess that's either a corrupted SD card or a software bug in volumio. What's the output of "amixer"?

Hi I've got the same problem with no volume control at all with amp2 and OMSC. I tried with a nice SD card class 10 and no differences. This problem has been sold?
I took a new Rasb pi 3 with only OMSC installation. And I configure hard drive :hifiberry dacplus overlay and for audio ALSA, result sound come from the speaker max and I can't find a way to control the volume. Help please ;) regards
You can login via SSH and run the command "alsamixer" to control the volume. OSMC might also have some hotkeys to control the volume, but I don't know these. I recommend to ask the OSMC developers about these. You might also find it somewhere in the settings menu.

Maybe it isn't installed on OSMC. As far as I know (i might be incorrect), OSMC is based on Raspbian. In this case, you should be able to install it using
sudo apt-get update
sudo ap-get install -y alsa-utils

Yes, I'm using alsamixer. I can set the volume briefly, but then something seems to override it each time, and the sound comes out of the speakers at maximum volume. The volume level setting in alsamixer doesn't visually change however. And if I increase or decrease the volume again, it only briefly stays set (maybe for a second) before blasting out at full volume again.
This is really strange. Look like something is overwriting the volume settings in your setup. It must be some background process that accesses the mixer settings.
This is a plain Raspbian without any other software installed? No other hardware is connected?

Yes, it's a standard Raspbian install, with no other software.
There's a Raspberry Pi 7" touch screen connected.
Have you connected the touchscreen to GPIO2/3?

I think I've read somewhere that DAC+ does not support Alsa, but DAC+ Pro does? And you say "the Amp2 is basically a DAC+"... so: Is it possible after all, to control volume of an Amp2 with Volumio?? What does "run the command alsamixer to control the volume" mean; do I have to use the command line to controll volume?

Hi,
so playback is working, but you can't control the volume? Volumio often seems to mix up onboard sound and additional sound cards. Therefore, I guess the configuration is incorrect. If you configured hw0,0, but the GUI says hw1,0, there is definitely something wrong with the configuration.
However as Volumio overwrites files that have been edited, you should directly ask the Volumio developers or try another distribution.

When the UI complained about hw1,0 I configured /etc/mpd.conf, and that error was gone. This was one of my adaptions, therefore I mentioned it... in other words: Yes, there is playback, but no volume control.
Just to be clear about that part of my question: Amp2's volume can be alsa-controlled, right?

Yes, the volume can be ALSA controlled. You can just login and run the "alamixer" command (I hope this is installed).

To let you know: One has not only to set "Playback Options" -> "Volume Options" -> "Mixer Control Name" to "Digital" (which I tried) and save (which I did), but restart afterwards. Despite Volumio's pop up saying everything was set and restarted *eye rolling smiley here*
So: No, it's not a problem of the Amp2, and not even of Volumios capabilities, but of the UI communicating what to do.

Disconnecting GPIO2/3 has made little difference. I've only managed to try it briefly, but I get maybe 30-60 seconds now before something changes the volume to maximum again.
Reverting back to Max2Play (which the intention is to use) still exhibits the same issue whether GPIO2/3 is connected or not.

you should not "try" to disconnect GPIO2/3, but leave it disconnected. There is no need to connect these. They WILL interfere with the connection to the Amp. It is not allowed to connect the display to GPIO 2/3.
Please disconnect the display completely and check if something changes.

They are disconnected, and I have left them permanently disconnected. By "try it briefly" I just meant I haven't had the time available to test it extensively. Life keeps getting in the way of projects :)

FWIW I had the same problem with an AMP+. Volume control works fine as long as I'm using wired ethernet. Enabling WiFi seems to trigger the 100% volume state.

In the end I ditched the Amp 2, bought an external amp, and plugged it into the Pi's headphone jack... By no means perfect, but it does the job.
The volume (max ) slider on HiFiBerryOS is a bit wonkey, you have to click on it and then arrow it to the left.
This solved my max sound to the extreme issues.
