Static or no sound HIfiberry Amp on RPI2/Raspbian Jessie

Hi, I'm trying to build a headless RPI for music only.

This is a Rpi2 with a Hifiberry Amp+ board. After trying many options, I settled for barebones Raspbian Jessie Lite.

I did the following:

1) modified config.txt to enable the Hifiberry amp

  (dtoverlay=hifiberry-amp)

2) created the /etc/asound.conf  as per:

https://www.hifiberry.com/build/documentation/configuring-linux-3-18-x/

3) aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: sndrpihifiberry [snd_rpi_hifiberry_amp], device 0: HifiBerry AMP HiFi tas5713-hifi-0 []
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

4) tried with sox, mplayer and I get no sound. aplay with a wav file will output only static.. I also run amixer with both controls and set volume to 100%

Any ideas what could be wrong here? This same hardware did work alright with Volumio last night (changed plans because Volumio wouldn't let me handle volume adequately so I want more control)

Thanks!!
